Srnojedy – Elbe, cycle paths and waterworks

Srnojedy is a destination for travellers who want to combine riverside landscapes, technical structures and active exploration. The main attractions are the waterworks, the Elbe, cycle paths and a historical trace. Waterworks and the Elbe

The original weir at Srnojedy was built between 1932 and 1942. It maintains the water level in the impoundment area at 212.99 m above sea level, thereby creating suitable conditions for inland navigation. The waterworks comprise a movable weir, a small hydropower plant, a lock chamber and a boat passage. The movable weir maintains the water level, while the lock chamber and boat passage serve navigation, and the hydropower plant adds energy generation to the technical facility. This also makes the site interesting for visitors who want to learn not only about a landscape but also about the technical functions of a waterworks.

A particular detail is the fish pass at the waterworks. It is located in the left dividing wall of the lock chamber, is 1.2 m wide and 41.1 m long, and is a technical chamber-type fish pass. Its purpose is to enable fish migration. Thus, navigation, water regulation and a structure ensuring the continuity of the watercourse come together at this site.

Cycling and walks

The Elbe forms the cadastral boundary of Srnojedy on one side. Several specific points of connection are documented for cyclists: The Svítkov–Srnojedy cycle path connects at the road bridge over the Elbe, the Rosický most. The completed section of the cycle path is 0.844 km long. In addition, the Pardubická Labská Cyklostezka now runs from Svítkov to the centre of Srnojedy.

For planning purposes, it is useful to distinguish between the completed section of the Svítkov–Srnojedy cycle path and the continuing Pardubická Labská Cyklostezka. The connection at the road bridge and the route to the town centre mark two different reference points for a cycling trip: crossing the Elbe and the town centre. Cycling excursions along the Elbe are possible in the area around Srnojedy; the surroundings are also suitable for walks. This allows more active and quieter sections to be weighted differently when planning your trip, without having to commit to just one way of exploring the area.

Boat trips and local history

The excursion boat Arnošt z Pardubic travels along the Elbe to Srnojedy. The first historical mention of Srnojedy dates back to 1410. At that time, the landed nobleman Jan ze Srnojed, known by the nickname Tluch, was the first owner. There was also an hereditary ferry service called Košlan near the mill.
