Libišany – Discover Village History and Wet Meadows

Libišany reveals its history through places that differ in form and function.

Village history and very ancient settlement traces

A stone cross with a biblical inscription stands in the central village square of Libišany. In the village centre, a monument commemorates those who fell in the First World War. It consists of a granite block and bears a plaque with 30 names. Its specific design combines the material of the monument with a memorial listing the deceased by name. Another stone cross can be found in the cemetery of Libišany. It depicts Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary. The village square, village centre and cemetery therefore each feature their own historical and religious memorial sites, with the individual depictions being distinct from one another. A fortified mound with a small, functional bell remains from the former Libišany fortress. The bell tower has a circular ground plan and a conical roof. The fortress is located in the village on the main road and is freely accessible. This makes it possible to view the surviving site directly within the village landscape, rather than seeing it merely as a historical name in the village's history. At Na Bahnech, traces of a pile-dwelling settlement have been found. It is generally attributed to the Funnel Beaker culture and dated to around 3800 to 3500 BC. The settlement was built on wooden platforms in a waterlogged area flooded by the Elbe. The wooden platforms and the location in a wet floodplain are among the distinctive features of this archaeological site. They clearly distinguish it from the visible memorial sites in today's village.

Peat deposits and wet meadows

The Libišany peat deposit covers 42.432 hectares and lies in an old riverbed of the Elbe. The area around Libišany also contains protected wet meadows with reed stands covering 11.94 hectares. The two area figures refer to different landscapes: the peat deposit lies in the old riverbed, while the wet meadows are described as a protected area with reeds. The open meadows in the surrounding area include areas that are occasionally flooded. Orchids, marsh dandelions and snipes find a habitat there. The alternation between open meadows that appear drier and areas that are temporarily flooded shapes the described living conditions for the plants and birds.

Events dated in 2026

For 2026, the fourth edition of Libišanské posvícení was scheduled as a celebration of the local community at the football pitch in Libišany. The programme included craft workshops and ceramics. The event therefore combined practical work with a creative focus. Fishing competitions for the fourth edition were scheduled for 13 June 2026 at the Vrškovský municipal pond in Libišany.
