Lipoltice – Church, Geology and Annual Events

Lipoltice combines an unusually old ecclesiastical complex with distinctive geological sites and a lively annual calendar of events. The oldest building structure in Lipoltice is the early Gothic Kostel sv. Matouše Church, built around 1280. The church complex lies south of the village center on a gentle slope that descends to the north and west. It is enclosed by the oval wall of a former cemetery. The site is therefore interesting not only because of its considerable age, but also because of the clearly recognizable historical boundaries of the complex.

The entrance is on the west side through a gate. For orientation on site, this specific location is more helpful than a general description of the village layout: the church is not right in the center, but south of it and on terrain that slopes in two directions.

Another historical trace is the fortress in Lipoltice. The fortress in Lipoltice was first mentioned in 1486; it still existed in 1509 and was considered abandoned by 1544. For visitors interested in cultural history, this creates a second point of reference alongside the preserved church.

Quartzite Outcrop and Geotope

Lipoltická skála is located near Lipoltice at an elevation of 298 m above sea level. The name refers to a quartzite outcrop, meaning an exposure of rock emerging from the subsurface and rising above the surrounding shales. This makes the site suitable for observing the landscape in a way that reveals not only the surface but also the geological structure.

In addition, the geological locality “Lipoltice – Cambrian” is Geotope No. 10 of the Železné hory National Geopark. Alternating layers of gray quartz sandstones and gray to gray-black chlorite-sericite schists with graphite are exposed there. The different rock layers give the visit a scientifically oriented focus.

The locality “Lipoltice – Cambrian” is freely accessible; by car, it can be reached to within 250 m. This clearly distinguishes it from a site intended exclusively for historical sightseeing and makes it relevant when choosing an excursion destination during your stay.

Events Throughout the Year

A large number of events take place in Lipoltice every year. Recurring annual events include balls, carnival, the burning of the witches, Children’s Day and the switching on of the Christmas tree lights. The range thus extends from social gatherings and a seasonal custom to a dedicated event for children.
