Vysoke Chvojno: Nature, Trails and History

Vysoke Chvojno is a destination for travelers who want to combine experiences in nature, physical activity and a manageable cultural element. The main attractions are the Vysoké Chvojno Arboretum, the Viselce educational trail, accessible year-round to pedestrians and cyclists, and the protected area of U Parku. There is also a bison enclosure in the northern part of the town, as well as St. Gothard Church with its long history. The Vysoké Chvojno Arboretum

The Vysoké Chvojno Arboretum was established by Alexander Pallavicini between 1886 and 1889 in the English style on an area of 6 ha. The arboretum contains 220 labeled species of trees and shrubs. An information system and several rest areas provide clear orientation during your visit. For an excursion combining different interests, the labeled species can form the botanical focus, while other natural and cultural topics complement the day's itinerary. The grounds thus combine a specific collection of woody plants with a historical context of their creation.

Viselce Educational Trail for Hiking and Cycling

Those looking for a more active focus will find a clearly defined route in the Viselce educational trail. The entire trail is 6.5 km long and accessible year-round to pedestrians and cyclists. It ends in Vysoké Chvojno at a game enclosure. This makes it possible to plan the trail as an independent excursion; at the same time, its endpoint provides a specific connection to the town. The length makes the route easy to compare with other activities, while the endpoint in Vysoké Chvojno provides clear orientation for planning your day.

U Parku: Protected Forest and Old-Growth Trees

The U Parku nature reserve offers a different perspective; it has been protected since 1955. It is a remnant of mixed deciduous forest with spruce trees on a south-facing marl slope. In the area known as “Prachovská stráň,” the trees are more than 170 years old. If you would like to place the natural setting itself at the center of your travel plans, this provides a contrast to the systematically labeled arboretum: there, tree and shrub species take center stage; here, it is the protected woodland and its hillside location.

St. Gothard Church and Animal Enclosure

St. Gothard Church also anchors Vysoké Chvojno historically. Its first mention dates back to the 14th century; it was rebuilt in 1735. The two dates provide the church with two different historical reference points: an early written mention and a later rebuilding. It thus complements the natural attractions and educational trail with a cultural focus.

There is also an approximately 0.7 ha bison enclosure in the northern part of Vysoké Chvojno.
