Hlavečník: History, Landscape and Trails

Hlavečník is a destination for travelers who want to combine history, landscape and activity. History with several visible traces

The history of Hlavečník dates back at least to 1228. That year, Hlavečník was donated to Opatovice Monastery. The former name Hlávecko is also part of the village’s history: in the 13th century, it changed to Hlavečník. Thus, the older village form Hlávecko contrasts with the later form Hlavečník.

Cultural heritage in the village and the wider area

A special connection to cultural heritage exists through the grounds of the Kladruby nad Labem National Cultural Monument Stud Farm. They also include the cadastral area of Hlavečník. The protected Opatovický Canal likewise has a section within the village’s cadastral area. The stud farm grounds and the canal therefore relate to the same cadastral area, but represent different protected elements: a National Cultural Monument in one case and a protected canal in the other. A coin hoard discovered in Hlavečník was handed over to the National Museum in Prague and exhibited there under the name of its finder.

In the wider regional surroundings of Hlavečník lies the UNESCO World Heritage Site Landscape for the Breeding and Training of Ceremonial Carriage Horses in Kladruby nad Labem. The cultural landscape includes a sandy floodplain, pastures, meadows and fields, as well as forests, parkland, paths, avenues, groups of trees, individual trees and watercourses. The cultural landscape is used for breeding and training Kladruber horses.

Sandy Fields, Forests and Protected Areas

The immediate landscape around Hlavečník is characterized by predominantly sandy fields. The forests around the village also have their own names: Sokolí lies north of Hlavečník, Splávy to the south and Skřípěř to the east. In addition, the Kladrubské Polabí Protected Landscape Zone includes Hlavečník, creating a protected regional landscape area. Agricultural fields, the three spatially distributed forest areas and the protected regional natural area therefore define the surroundings.

Hiking and Excursions from Hlavečník

There are several specific options for active days. A blue-marked hiking trail leads from Hlavečník along the Černá strouha to Labské Chrčice. The Po práci legrani – Hlavečník excursion route also passes through the village. A road to Rasoch leads over Písník Hill. The hiking trail therefore follows a watercourse to another village, while the excursion route remains in Hlavečník and the road leads over Písník to Rasoch. Černá strouha and Písník represent different landscape connections: one lies along the hiking trail, while the other is situated on the road connection to Rasoch.
