Ořechov – Castle, Winegrowing and Tradition

Ořechov combines landscapes, architectural history and vibrant regional traditions. The village lies in the southeastern foothills of the Chřiby Mountains and in the valley of the Ořechovský potok stream. Extensive vineyards still cover the southeastern slopes. The village landscape therefore includes the valley, the vineyard-covered slopes and historic buildings. Castle and Chapels as Distinctive Features of the Village

Ořechov Castle was built on the site of a former fortress. One wing of the castle was converted into a Roman Catholic chapel. In addition, a Baroque chapel was added to the castle; following restoration after 1941, it is still in use today. This architectural history makes the castle a place where different historical periods are directly connected.

In the park in front of the castle stands the listed Kaple sv. Václava with a bell tower. The chapel contains a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk dating from 1747. It was rebuilt in 1849 and reconstructed in 2011–2012. The architectural history of Kaple sv. Václava can therefore be traced through a sequence of dates: 1747, 1849 and 2011–2012 represent the statue, rebuilding and reconstruction. The Kaplička Andělů strážných on the road to Syrovín also commemorates the village’s history: it was built in 1873 as a memorial to the soldiers from Ořechov who returned from the war.

Festivals, Customs and Local Culture

Ořechov also demonstrates its connection with the region through recurring events. Every year, on the feast of Saint Wenceslas, the Slovácké hody s právem festival takes place. Many young people and children in traditional dress take part. There is also a regular Easter market and the Košt ořechovky tasting event. As a result, seasonal festivals and local customs, alongside the historic buildings, form an important part of the travel experience.

The Folklórní sdružení Ořechov works to preserve and further develop the folk traditions, customs and traditional dress of the Slovácko region. Its goals include organising public cultural events. For travellers who want to learn not only about individual buildings but also about regional identity and living traditions, this cultural aspect adds to the history of the village.

Cycling Routes through Ořechov

Ořechov is also connected to several routes for active exploration. A tourist cycling route passes through the village. The Moravská vinařská cyklostezka also runs through Ořechov. The “Kolem štěrkopískových jezer na rozhlednu” route leads through Ořechov. The three connections each have a different focus: one is generally tourist-oriented, one refers to winegrowing in its name, and one leads to a lookout point. This makes it possible to consider vineyards, local history and onward routes as different focuses when planning a trip, without reducing the village’s distinctive features to just one theme.
