Hostětín Between Landscape, Learning and Regional Flavours

Hostětín combines the landscape of the White Carpathians with unusual nature and cultural projects. The Sochy v krajině project vividly demonstrates how art and landscape can be brought together: a trail leads to 15 wooden sculptures, some of which are located in the cadastral area of Hostětín. The works stand at viewpoints, by springs and in places associated with local legends. At the same time, they complement the characteristic mosaic of the White Carpathians, made up of fields, gardens, orchards, meadows and predominantly deciduous forests.

Nature Garden and Centrum Veronica

A particular focus is the nature garden at Centrum Veronica. It contains various features designed to promote biodiversity, including protective and nesting structures for reptiles, birds, bumblebees, hedgehogs, insects and bats. The nature garden is open year-round and freely accessible; admission is voluntary. It thus provides a concrete place where nature-friendly gardening and the support of various animal species can be observed directly.

Centrum Veronica itself is also one of Hostětín’s distinctive features. In 2006, it became the first public building in the Czech Republic to meet the passive-house standard. Today, it offers educational and information programmes on sustainable regional development and ways of putting it into practice. For visitors who want not only to observe the landscape but also to learn about the ideas behind it, this focus complements the natural experiences with a cultural and informative perspective.

Educational Trails Offering Different Perspectives

The Po zelené Hostětínem educational trail is approximately 1.5 km long and suitable for pedestrians and cyclists. The demonstration nature garden and orchard have a different focus: an educational trail and playful activities involve the public in nature-friendly gardening, preserving old fruit varieties and restoring extensive ecological orchards in the landscape.

The Naokolo Hostětína educational trail leads to elevated places with beautiful views. In clear weather, the pilgrimage sites of Velehrad and Hostýn can be seen above Pitín. In this way, Hostětín offers short, clearly differentiated discoveries that can be combined with further views of the landscape, without all the experiences having the same character.

Cider Mill, Organic Products and a September Festival

The local identity also includes the local cider mill. Since 2000, it has produced Hostětín organic apple ciders and organic herbal syrups. More than four-fifths of its production carries the “BIO – Product of Organic Farming” certification; the apples are preferably supplied by farmers practising organic agriculture in the White Carpathians. The regional product range thus remains closely connected to the landscape from which the apples come.

A recurring event is the Jablečná slavnost. It takes place in Hostětín at the foot of the White Carpathians every September and, alongside the festival centred on apples, includes culture and environmental education.
