Krasonice: Castle, Church and Březina Trail

Krasonice is a destination for anyone who would like to combine historic buildings with a literary-themed trail and the landscape of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands. In the village, reminders of several centuries meet the Březina Trail, while the surrounding area offers further varied impressions with a mill, a pond and a weir.

Castle and Church in the Village Centre

Krasonice Castle is located in the centre of the village, near the Church of Saint Lawrence, and is privately owned. It probably stands on the site of an earlier fortress mentioned in sources dating from 1353. In 1630, the former fortress was converted into a late Renaissance, single-storey castle. Its distinctive features include the irregular inner courtyard and the arcades on the ground floor.

The Church of Saint Lawrence also reflects the village’s long history. It is documented in Krasonice as early as 1311 and acquired its present Baroque appearance around 1771. A large painting of Saint Lawrence hangs above the marble high altar. The village centre thus offers historical details that are clearly distinct from one another: at the castle, the former fortification, its conversion and the architecture are the focus, while at the church, the early reference, the Baroque appearance and the interior furnishings take centre stage.

The Chapel on Humberk

Another notable cultural landmark is the Chapel of the Virgin Mary on Humberk. It was built in 1664 in thanksgiving for the healing of Karel Maximilián Thurn’s diseased eyes. The building is designed in the Neo-Gothic style, and its windows are decorated with stained glass. Particularly striking is the slender, 22-metre-high tower with three harmoniously coordinated bells. The chapel’s origins and architectural details give it a character of its own alongside the castle and church.

Krasonice’s historic features also include the statue of Saint John of Nepomuk. It was blessed on 18 June 1720. Those interested in smaller monuments and local traditions will find here another tangible detail of the village’s history alongside the larger ecclesiastical and secular buildings.

The Březina Trail

The Březina Trail passes through Krasonice and connects places associated with the poet Otokar Březina. The trail is 55 to 60 kilometres long and runs along roads, field paths and footpaths. Its climbs are considered not particularly demanding.
