Chapel and local history

The freestanding Chapel of St. Peter and St. Paul dates from the 18th century and is considered a symbol and landmark of Bílý Kámen. Its square floor plan, hipped roof and small four-sided bell tower give the building a clearly recognisable form. The restoration phase completed in 2023 is particularly noteworthy: the original, rich interior paintings were uncovered, fixed, fully retouched and reconstructed in their original form.

In front of the chapel’s eastern façade stands a memorial stone bearing the year 1754. This date probably refers to the surveying of the newly founded village. The chapel therefore tells not only of its own construction history but is also connected with the development of Bílý Kámen. Another historical detail lies outside the village centre: a medieval reconciliation cross with bevelled beam edges stands by the roadside between Bílý Kámen and Vyskytná. An engraved crossbow-bolt relief is affixed to both the front and back; the site lies east of Bílý Kámen on the road to Jihlava.

The history of the roads is also part of the character of the village. The historic Humpolecká cesta between Humpolec and Jihlava ran through Bílý Kámen. In the forest section between Větrný Jeníkov and Bílý Kámen, earth remains of older paths have also been preserved in the form of hollow ways and groups of hollow ways. They may be connected with historic mining.

Mining as a special excursion theme

The Bílý Kámen mining site represents an initial mining phase dating approximately to the second half of the 13th century, involving so-called mining “to daylight”. At the site, a 225-metre-long ore vein was followed with a single line of shafts. Twenty-seven shafts or mining pits have survived, with a diameter of approximately 10 metres and a depth of up to 5 metres.

The connection between mining and roads can also be explored via the Hornická naučná stezka educational trail in Jihlava. The trail comprises 13 information panels and leads, among other places, to the Bílý Kámen locality. The Bílý Kámen area is also home to sites where specially protected plant and animal species have been found. Preserved floodplains of running waters are legally protected there as important landscape features. Cultural history is thus complemented by connections with nature, which play a distinct role when choosing a travel theme.

Cycling, transport and landscape

For cycling trips, Cycle Route 5215 runs through Bílý Kámen and continues towards Smrčná and Rantířov. The road connections complement this orientation: Road III/0021 leads to Bílý Kámen and, immediately beyond the built-up area, joins Road II/523, which connects Jihlava with Humpolec. When choosing accommodation, you can therefore focus on local history, a cycling trip or other destinations along the documented connections without mixing together the village’s different themes.

Bílý Kámen is also connected in several directions by public transport. ICOM bus services run from Bílý Kámen towards Jihlava, Humpolec, Žďár nad Sázavou, Úsobí and Dudín. The bus stop is located approximately 700 metres from the village centre on Road II/523. Other destinations in the same selection are Telc, Kaliště U Horních Dubenek, Kalhov, Bítovčice, Rozseč, Kamenná and Jihlavy, Čížov and Vápovice.
