Knínice: Chapel, Stations of the Cross and Pond Landscape

Knínice combines sacred culture with a landscape stretching from the Želetavka Valley to the heights of the Slatinské kopce. The town is located in the southeastern part of the Brtnická vrchovina and therefore offers various possibilities for a stay: you can discover architectural heritage, follow a traditional Stations of the Cross route or spend time by the water at Husinec Pond. It is precisely this combination that makes Knínice interesting for travellers who want to get to know not just a single sight, but the different facets of a place.

Landscape between the valley and the ridges

The geographical location is particularly easy to understand in Knínice. The cadastral area extends eastwards to the Želetavka Valley and westwards, or towards the heights, to the ridge of the Slatinské kopce. The Prokopka stream also flows through Knínice. These three landscape features – valley, ridge and stream – give the place a distinct spatial character without reducing Knínice to a single type of landscape. The area consequently connects a valley region with a mountain ridge within the same cadastral area of Knínice.

Sacred sites and a distinctive Stations of the Cross route

The Chapel of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross stands at the centre of the cultural heritage. It is considered a remarkable regional example of a sacred space and architectural heritage and is associated with the veneration of the Jesuit saint Francis Xavier. For your visit, the chapel thus provides access to both the religious and architectural-cultural side of Knínice.

The Stations of the Cross are also part of the local tradition. The prayer book “Decas SS. Stationum” was published for devotion at its ten stations. The name points to the connection between the specific route and its spiritual significance. Those who want to understand Knínice through its sacred monuments will therefore find not only a single building here, but also a traditional form of devotion.

Husinec and the Apostolská desítka pilgrimage route

Husinec Pond adds another aspect to a visit, with a different character. It is one of the two ponds still preserved in Knínice today and is suitable for swimming. Alongside the chapel and Stations of the Cross, there is therefore also a place by the water, adding a more relaxed option to your stay.

The Apostolská (Knínická) desítka pilgrimage route is approximately 6 kilometres long and includes ten chapels. The approximate length is deliberately intended as a guideline; at the same time, the number of chapels gives the route a clearly recognisable structure. For planning purposes, you can thus distinguish between a cultural and sacred focus, a route with several stations and time spent at Husinec.
