Nepomyšl
If you are looking for a place in the Czech Republic with an unusual architectural history, sacred works of art and signposted trails, Nepomyšl offers several different points of interest. Nepomyšl Castle immediately stands out because of its shape: externally, it forms a 16-sided polygon, while the courtyard has the shape of a nine-sided polygon. Its history also goes back further, as the castle developed from a fortress probably founded in the first half of the 14th century.
Castle History and the Church of St Nicholas
The castle is not open to the public. When viewing historic architectural forms, you should therefore distinguish between the castle’s exterior appearance and interior visits that are actually possible. The Church of St Nicholas in Nepomyšl provides an accessible cultural highlight. The Gothic church was founded in the mid-14th century and contains fragments of Gothic wall paintings from the 14th and 15th centuries. It can be visited by prior arrangement with the municipal office.
In front of the church stands a Baroque statue of St Nicholas dating from 1907. The saint is the patron saint of the Nepomyšl market. Historical monuments can also be found outside the church grounds: on the road towards Brody, on the right-hand side, stands a statue of the Expectant Virgin Mary erected in 1712. A chapel was restored in the 1990s, restored again in 2018 and reconsecrated in 2019. On the outskirts of Nepomyšl, near the kaolin works, there is also a protected lime tree on a hill that is approximately 320 years old.
Hiking and Cycling Around Nepomyšl
For planning an active day, there is a clearly described hiking connection: a blue-marked hiking trail leads from Nepomyšl via Dvérce, Dětaň and Kružínský vrch to Kryry. When cycling, you can consider two routes with different courses. Cycle Route 35 runs along the western edge of the cadastral area of Nepomyšl. Cycle Route 3080 is located in the immediate vicinity of Nepomyšl.
The two routes therefore provide different points of orientation for planning your trip, without requiring you to commit to just one type of excursion. Those who want to combine culture and exercise can combine the town’s historic sites with research into hiking or cycling routes. The specific choice of accommodation depends on which of this local and route information is most important for your stay.
