Podbořany: Discover Culture, History and Excursions

Podbořany combines cultural history, distinctive buildings, archaeological traces and concrete excursion ideas. Museum in the Former Town Hall

The Muzeum Podbořany is located in the former town hall at Dukelská 1. The building’s current Baroque appearance dates from 1751. Two exhibitions give a visit to the museum different historical and natural-history emphases. The museum thus focuses both on the history of the building and on the development of a community.

“Hlasy Čechů z Volyně” presents the history of the Volhynian Czech community: from emigration from Austria-Hungary to the Russian Empire of that time, through the return to Czechoslovakia, to later developments. The exhibition combines these topics with accompanying texts, maps, numerous photographs and recollections from eyewitnesses. The “Geologie na Podbořansku” exhibition also includes the fossilised trunk of a horsetail tree discovered in the Podbořansko region.

Water Castle, Churches and Archaeological Landscape

The Vodní tvrz Hlubany in Hlubany, Podbořany, is a Gothic water castle from the second half of the 14th century. A moat surrounds the complex. The moat shapes the character of the site and adds a medieval accent beside the former town hall. This creates a clearly different historical motif alongside the museum’s urban history.

The Kostel sv. Petra a Pavla is a single-nave late Baroque Roman Catholic church with a tower in the western façade and was built in 1781. The organ was installed in June 1750. The Kostel Božího Spasitele, meanwhile, is a Pseudo-Romanesque church from the beginning of the 20th century; it was consecrated on 9 November 1902. The churches therefore bring together different stylistic and temporal references: Late Baroque stands alongside Pseudo-Romanesque.

Vrch Rubín combines natural and settlement history. It has been protected as a significant landscape feature since 2 September 1993. The hill was inhabited for almost 4,000 years, from the Neolithic to the Iron Age, and is considered one of the most important archaeological sites in north-western Bohemia. This long period of settlement adds a strong archaeological dimension to its protected status. For your planning, Rubín therefore offers a distinct focus between landscape and the past.

Circular Route and Swimming Facilities

The municipal route “Trasa A – Po stopách Schillera” is an 18.4-kilometre circular route. It leads from Podbořany via Kryry and Vroutek back to Podbořany. The loop connects Podbořany with Kryry and Vroutek and complements the cultural attractions with an excursion through several towns.
