Discover Cítoliby: Town Center, Educational Trails and Bažantnice

Cítoliby surprises visitors with a town center where history and landscape are closely intertwined. The center preserves a regular layout that has existed for seven centuries. The market town therefore offers several different starting points for a tour: sacred architecture, historic sculptures, a chateau, educational trails and a recreation area on the eastern edge of town.

Market Square and Cultural History

The Church of St. James the Elder is a Gothic, single-nave building. Together with Cítoliby Chateau, it forms a deliberately coordinated urban composition. The chateau itself is part of the market square of the market town of Cítoliby and thus directly contributes to the character of the town center.

The Holy Trinity Column also stands in the market square. Created in 1680, the column is the oldest freestanding sculpture in Cítoliby. The local group of sculptures also includes Saint Barbara, Saint Leonard and Saint Procopius. Those interested in the town’s cultural traces will therefore find not just individual sights, but an ensemble revealed through the central square and its buildings.

The Dělnický dům is also part of the town’s cultural history. The Workers’ House was built between 1920 and 1923 and developed into a center of social life in the local community. Another musical connection leads to Jan Janoušek, the first director of the Cítoliby Chateau Orchestra.

Educational Trails between the Town Center and the Landscape

Two educational trails connect local history with active exploration. The Smolnický potok educational trail continues as far as Cítoliby. The Cítoliby educational trail leads from the municipal office via Tyršovo náměstí and the niche chapel on Na Plevně Street to Bažantnice and then to a cross. The different routes show how the town, its buildings and the landscape are interconnected, without the trails being limited to the same destination.

Two additional information boards in Cítoliby present visitors with the history and monuments of the market town. They therefore provide factual orientation for anyone who wants to learn about the town not only through individual buildings, but also through its development.

Bažantnice and the Chapel on the Edge of Town

Bažantnice is a recreation area on the eastern edge of Cítoliby. A Baroque bridge stands on the dam of the pond there.

At the edge of Cítoliby, on the road to Brloh, stands the niche chapel dedicated to Saint Apollonia. It is therefore located at a different point of reference from the buildings and sculptures of the market square. Cítoliby can thus be explored through several thematic focal points: the regular historic town center, the cultural monuments and the paths leading to Bažantnice.
