Zálužice: Discover Baroque Townscapes and Culture

Zálužice is a destination for travellers who want to discover architectural history not only in large cities but also through distinctive townscapes. The landmark of Zálužice is a three-span reinforced-concrete bridge over the Ohře, built in 1934. The bridge underwent extensive reconstruction in 2010 and 2011. At the southern edge of Zálužice, there is also a Baroque chapel dedicated to Saint John of Nepomuk, which was remodelled in the 19th century.

Baroque Townscape and Stekník Chateau

A particular focus of cultural and historical interest lies in Stekník. The historic centre has retained its original Baroque form to this day. Since Decree No. 249/95 of the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic, dated 22 September 1995, Stekník has been a village heritage conservation zone and was at that time the only village heritage conservation zone in the former Louny District.

Stekník Chateau is one of the most important Rococo buildings in Bohemia and is surrounded by an Italian-style terraced garden. The restored interiors are open to the public. The visitor route presents the chateau as it was during the time of its last private owner, the family of Swiss consul Gerold Déteindre. A historic tour of the chateau’s surroundings also conveys the history of the village and the chateau, as well as information about important personalities and monuments of the region.

Further Examples of Regional Architectural Culture

Rybňany also adds to the cultural and historical character of the area. Opposite the farmstead in Rybňany, a damaged Baroque statue of Saint Barbara from 1719 stands on a double pedestal. Rybňany also preserves a valuable agricultural complex with residential buildings, a barn, a drying facility and stables. It includes a group of barns dating from the early 19th century. Particularly striking is the distinctive cone-shaped icehouse, an architectural form that is exceptionally rare in the region.

At the edge of Zálužice, Farmstead No. 6 displays features of vernacular Baroque. Together with the chapel, the bridge and the historic townscapes, it offers several tangible points of reference for a journey in which small architectural monuments and larger chateau complexes play an equal role. The bridge, the chapel and Farmstead No. 6 represent three different facets: the history of engineering, sacred architecture and rural design. Those who consciously consider these features side by side can understand Zálužice as a cohesive cultural and historical destination without reducing the place to a single landmark. The dates and phases of reconstruction add a temporal perspective to the overall impression.

Hop Fields and Further Destinations
