Zatec – Hop Culture, Museums and Distinctive Cityscapes

Žatec stands out for a cityscape that makes its hop-growing tradition visible: within the UNESCO World Heritage ensemble, the exceptional urban silhouette is shaped by the vertical landmarks of the hop kilns and the tall chimneys of the sulfur chambers. Hop culture with unusual insights

The Žatec Hop Museum presents the development of hop growing from the Early Middle Ages to the present day across 4,000 m². It is the largest exhibition of its kind in the world and is housed in a technical monument that exemplifies industrial utilitarian architecture from the end of the 19th century. This means that a single visit focuses both on the history of hop growing and on the architecture of its surroundings.

The permanent exhibition in the Renaissance malt house presents the history of malting together with archaeological finds. Visitors can make their own pencil in an interactive exhibition. For children, the Hop Museum offers the game “Cesta chmelového skřítka Hopa”, at the end of which participants receive a small gift. The guided tour of the Hop Lighthouse uses an elevator with 3D projection and offers views of Žatec.

The Temple of Hops and Beer has an observation tower with views of Žatec city center and the surrounding hop fields. The temple also includes the Hop Astronomical Clock, described as the only one of its kind in the world. For cycling tours, there is an e-bike charging station; charging cables for Universal, Bosch and Shimano types can be borrowed there.

Museums, Tours and City History

The K. A. Polánka Regional Museum divides the museum visit into four tours. The tour of the main building includes the exhibition “Žatecký stroj času” (“Žatec Time Machine”). In addition, the museum presents the history of the area around Žatec through unique collections. If you prefer different approaches to regional history, you can choose between the tours and the thematic offerings in the main building.

The reconstructed synagogue in Žatec has a richly decorated interior, a gallery and a rabbi’s house. It houses a permanent exhibition on the Jewish history of the region. The Meder House is one of the oldest and most valuable bourgeois houses in Žatec and offers interactive exhibitions on the history of Žatec. Both places make city history accessible through specific buildings and exhibitions; you can choose between Jewish regional history and the development of the city.

The offerings also differ in how they present information: they range from permanent exhibitions and tours through interactive formats to a tour with 3D projection and observation towers.
