Homole u Panny: Church, Museum and Cycling in the České středohoří

The Church of Saint Pius V

The Church of Saint Pius V is a Neoclassical church built on a rocky hill above the village square, marking the western edge of Homole u Panny. Its location makes it a clearly recognizable landmark within the village. It can be reached via a relatively steep path whose incline is eased by several sets of steps. This feature is part of the specific route and is more important when planning a visit than a general description of the church. A visit is therefore shaped not only by the building itself, but also by its relationship to the village square and the western edge of the village. Construction history with two dates

The church’s origins also offer a noteworthy historical point of reference. Its construction is dated in the literature to 1787; a chronogram gives 1788, while the foundation stone was laid in 1787. The church was built on the site of a chapel erected in 1724 by the Dominicans of Litoměřice. Several construction phases therefore come together at this site: the earlier chapel, the later Neoclassical church and the traditional date recorded in the chronogram.

Josef Emanuel Hibsch and the mineralogical museum

Another way to explore the history of Homole u Panny is through Josef Emanuel Hibsch. He was born here in 1852 and mapped the geology of the České středohoří. A mineralogical museum was established in Homole u Panny in his honor. The church and museum therefore focus on different aspects: while the church highlights local history and sacred architecture, the museum points to the geological study of the České středohoří landscape. Jubilee Trail and cycling route

Homole u Panny also lies on two routes described in different ways. Stage IV of the Jubilee Trail runs from Buková hora via Zubrnice and Homole u Panny to Sedlo and Litýš. The 58 km Route 3066 cycling loop runs from Ústí nad Labem via Velké Březno, Byňov, Homole u Panny, Třebušín, Ploskovice, Žitenice, Litoměřice, Píšťany, Libochovany, Církvice and Sebuzín, returning to Ústí nad Labem. The two routes therefore clearly differ in form: Stage IV connects Buková hora and Litýš via several intermediate villages, while Route 3066 is a 58 km loop returning to Ústí nad Labem. For orientation, it is therefore relevant whether Homole u Panny is included in a section of the Jubilee Trail or in a round trip. In both cases, the village can be combined with other stops along the route.
