Svata Katerina between Valley, Rock and Tradition

Svatá Kateřina lies in a deep valley of the Šebrovka stream. Above the village, the Kostel sv. Kateřiny church rises on a distinctive rocky spur. The valley and rocky ridge define the village and connect the natural landscape with a single prominent cultural monument. This gives the landscape a clear vertical structure: the stream course defines the valley, while the church directs the view towards the rocky spur above it.

The Kostel sv. Kateřiny church was built in the late Rustic Gothic style and is traditionally dated to 1469. It is considered the oldest surviving building in the Blansko District. Together with its position above the village, it is a cultural and historical landmark and part of the landscape at the same time. The architecture, historical dating and location on the rocky spur are directly connected here, making the church an independent destination within the village setting.

Hiking Trails and Mountains around the Village

Two marked hiking routes are available for active days. The blue-marked hiking trail leads from Kuřim railway station via Babí lom and Šebrov to Svatá Kateřina. From there, it continues via Olešná and Blansko to the Macocha tourist hut. The sequence of railway station, mountains, villages and hut gives the route a clearly recognisable succession of stops. You can therefore view the trail as a continuous connection through several landscapes and village areas.

The green-marked hiking trail leads from Svatá Kateřina via the Potoky signpost to Vranov or Bílovice nad Svitavou. This gives you two directions to choose from. Compared with the blue-marked route, the focus here is not on a long sequence of consecutive stops, but on choosing between two different directions. This makes it easier to decide which landscape should be the focus when planning a day of hiking.

The Babí Lom mountain lies in the nearby landscape. Jedla, Zlobica and Paní hora are also located in the surroundings of Svatá Kateřina. The mountains complement the two marked trails with additional landscape features. Those who wish to explore the surroundings not only along a route but also via individual elevations will find several destinations around the village.

Masopust and Regional Discoveries

Another side of the village can be seen during the annual Masopust in Svatá Kateřina. Usually, around 40 masked participants take part. Traditional doughnuts, cakes, open-faced sandwiches and other refreshments are offered along the procession route. Masopust thus combines movement, costumes and regional food in a local tradition. In addition to the landscape and church, a recurring community event is therefore also part of Svatá Kateřina’s character.

Historic Destinations in the Wider Area

In the wider regional area, Zámek Veveří, Kuchlov, Hrádek and Brno Zoo provide different points of interest. Zámek Veveří is a castle, Kuchlov and Hrádek are ruins, and Brno Zoo is a zoological institution. The range of options for planning excursions therefore extends from historic masonry to a zoological destination. The church and the Šebrovka Valley form the local focus, while the regional destinations offer additional contrasts between culture, ruins and a zoological institution. This allows you to combine exploring Svatá Kateřina with a variety of interests without losing sight of the village’s distinctive connection to the landscape and culture.
