Sulíkov – Church, Trails and Landscape in the Halasovo Kunštátsko Nature Park

Sulíkov lies on the northern edge of the Halasovo Kunštátsko Nature Park and combines a remarkable church landscape with marked trails and expansive viewpoints. This creates a destination where culture, landscape and active exploration can be experienced within a compact thematic area. The Church of Saint Mary Magdalene is particularly distinctive: it dates from the 13th century and is listed in the Czech Republic’s list of cultural monuments.

Churches, Chapels and Regional History

The chancel tower of the Church of Saint Mary Magdalene is probably of early Gothic origin and is considered one of the few exceptionally well-documented examples in Moravia. Those interested in architectural history will therefore find a specific detail here that goes beyond a general tour of the town. Another special feature is the Chapel of Saint Monica and Saint Augustine. Its floor plan is shaped like a tear and symbolizes Saint Monica’s tears for her son, Saint Augustine. The chapel was consecrated on 30 August 1998.

In the immediate vicinity of Sulíkov, Kunštát Castle offers accessible interiors that show the domestic culture of its last noble owners and the oldest parts of the original castle. In Rudka, the Cave of the Blanice Knights features sculptures by the sculptor Stanislav Rolínek; its surroundings are designed as a park. Vřesice was once home to extensive pottery production, with its pottery craftsmanship reaching its peak in the 1930s and 1940s. During the summer months, a fire-fighting reservoir there also serves as a swimming pool.

Views and Landscape in the Surrounding Area

The hill of Šibeník rises northwest of Sulíkov; from its summit, views extend across the wider surrounding area. Vřesice lies within the Halasovo Kunštátsko Nature Park and the protected zone of the Křetínka Reservoir. Above Vřesice, Povětrňák Hill offers views of the Boskovice Furrow, the Drahany Highlands and the Křetínka Reservoir. A windmill once stood on this hill. Brablec Hill, in turn, offers a view across the entire Křetínka Valley.

For nature-focused days, the surrounding forests are also part of the region’s experience: under suitable climatic conditions, numerous mushrooms and blueberries grow there. The various viewpoints and landscape settings allow you to choose between open panoramas, views of the water and a town visit with a stronger focus on cultural history, without losing sight of the destination’s distinctive features.

Cycling and Hiking

Marked local cycling trails as well as marked hiking trails pass through Sulíkov. The marked cycling route 5085 is particularly notable: it follows the Kunštát–Rudka–Sulíkov–Kněževes–Hartmanice route towards Polička. This also makes Sulíkov interesting for travellers who do not want to focus their stay on a single cultural attraction, but would rather explore the places and routes along a signposted trail.
