Discover Žernovník: Cross Stone, Nature Park and Observation Tower

Žernovník combines a small, distinctive cultural landmark with protected landscape and various opportunities for active exploration. For families who want to combine nature, a special sense of place and outdoor activities, the village offers several clearly distinct points of interest: the monolithic Cross Stone No. 0610, Lysicko Nature Park, hiking trails, cycling opportunities and, in winter, numerous cross-country ski tracks in the surrounding area.

A Cross Stone with Special Details

The monolithic Cross Stone No. 0610 stands in the park south of the village chapel. Its front and back bear raised reliefs of a wedge-shaped cross. The front also features the engraved inscription “LIDA” and a small cross. Žernovník therefore offers a distinct cultural landmark where the focus is not on a large complex but on the precise design of a single stone. Visitors who pay attention to smaller historical and religious landmarks during a visit will find several specific features here that can be distinguished from one another.

Landscape Between Grassland and Forest Edges

The Žernovník area lies within Lysicko Nature Park. The nature park serves to preserve permanent grassland, scattered greenery and forest edges reinforced by belts of shrubs. These landscape elements give the natural area a clearly defined structure and make the location interesting even for visitors who want to experience not only individual sights but also the surrounding landscape itself.

One of the landscape features is Horka u Žernovníka. It was registered in 1998 as a significant landscape feature in the cadastral area of Žernovník u Černé Hory. Another specific detail can be found on the southern side of Žernovník: at the intersection of roads III/37715 and III/37719 stands a group of four small-leaved lindens (Tilia cordata). In the middle of this group is a cross bearing the year 1859. Nature and local history appear directly alongside each other here, without the need for a long list of major sights.

Hiking, Cycling and Winter Trails

Because of its location at a crossroads, Žernovník is suitable as a starting and finishing point for hiking trails. Depending on the route chosen, the village can therefore mark either the beginning or the end of a day of hiking. The area around Žernovník is also suitable for cycling. In winter, there are numerous cross-country ski tracks in the surrounding area. This allows different forms of travel to be taken into account when choosing a time to visit: hiking and cycling are part of the leisure profile described here, while the cross-country ski tracks are explicitly associated with winter.

The Žernovník Observation Tower

Another destination is the Žernovník observation tower in the Skalky area, at an elevation of 455 metres. The observation tower is accessible year-round. This gives you a fixed point of interest regardless of the season, while the cross-country ski tracks in the surrounding area provide an explicitly winter-related addition. Together with the Cross Stone, the landscape features and the trails, this creates a local character that brings culture, nature observation and activity together in a manageable way.
