Starý Poddvorov

Starý Poddvorov combines a distinctive historical landmark with a wine-growing and orchard landscape, marked trails and vibrant regional culture. The village therefore offers various starting points for a trip: You can visit an unusual mill, set out on a cycling or hiking tour through the surrounding area and at the same time get to know the traditions of Podluží.

Windmill on the Hill

The Větrný mlýn Starý Poddvorov windmill is a post mill built entirely of wood in 1880. It stands on a hill approximately 3 km from Starý Poddvorov in the direction of Čejkovice, surrounded by a wine-growing and orchard landscape. Its location alone sets it apart from an ordinary village visit: The mill is connected to the open landscape, while its wooden construction provides tangible evidence of historical craftsmanship and milling traditions. The windmill grounds are open year-round. The windmill itself can also be viewed from the outside without a guided tour. This allows the visit to be arranged independently of a tour. There is also a stand operated by local winemakers on the grounds. The winemakers take turns, so visitors can taste wines from a different producer on each visit; at least one winemaker is present on weekends. Wine tasting is therefore an expressly documented part of the mill grounds, without the site being reduced solely to its historical landmark.

Cycling and Hiking through Starý Poddvorov

If you would like to explore the surroundings actively, the marked Podluží cycling route runs through Starý Poddvorov. It is part of the Moravské vinařské stezky network. The village is thus located on a designated cycling connection that reflects the regional character of the wine-growing landscape. A blue-marked hiking route also runs through Starý Poddvorov. Its course connects Mikulčice, Josefov, Nový Poddvorov, Starý Poddvorov, Hodonín and Vlkoš. The cycling route and hiking trail represent two different ways of including the village in a trip: One follows the regional wine-route network, while the other runs as a blue-marked route through several villages.

Village Square, Folklore and Podluží Traditions

The Chapel of St. Martin with a bell tower, Kaplička sv. Martina se zvonicí, dating from 1855, stands in the village square of Starý Poddvorov. The chapel therefore provides another historical point of reference for a visit to the village. While the mill is located outside the village on a hill, the chapel stands directly on the village square. The children’s folklore ensemble Dětský folklorní soubor Kordulka is also part of the village’s cultural identity. It was founded in September 1996 at the primary school in Starý Poddvorov. Kordulka is also associated with the Dětské krojované hody: The event revived by Kordulka developed from a local celebration into a festival regularly attended by ensembles from the surrounding regions as well as from Poland and Slovakia. Another way to get to know the Podluží ethnographic region is offered by the costume rental service in Starý Poddvorov. Individual costume pieces and complete costumes can be rented by prior telephone arrangement. For events, cultural encounters or exploring regional clothing, this is a tangible part of what the village offers.
