Mikulčice: Great Moravian History and Wine Tradition

Mikulčice combines Great Moravian history, sacred architecture, wine tradition, and paths through a distinctive river landscape. The focal point is the Slovanské hradiště Mikulčice, but the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, museums, and a designated 18-km tour also give the town different facets. Great Moravian History at the Slovanské hradiště

The Slovanské hradiště Mikulčice is a nationally protected cultural monument and a well-preserved archaeological site from the period of Great Moravia. At the time, it was an important center of power and the church; the Slavic missionaries Constantine and Methodius may have worked here. A 30-meter-high observation tower offers views primarily of the area of the early medieval fortified settlement and its surroundings. In good visibility, you can also see the White Carpathians and the Slovak Little Carpathians. The guided “KOSTEL” exhibition includes the authentic remains of a 9th-century church, part of a burial ground, and numerous exhibits. The “LODĚ” exhibition presents two oak monoxyles from the end of the 9th century as well as audiovisual elements; a visit usually takes about 45 minutes. Church and Local Heritage

The parish Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary has foundations dating from the 13th century, a nave and chancel from the 15th century, and a tower erected in 1701. Inside stands a distinctive, massive altar made from oak trunks found in the riverbed of the Morava. In front of the church, you can see a Baroque statue of St. Oldřich. The Chapel of St. Roch at the cemetery is a national cultural monument and is decorated with a painted Slovakian žudr. The repaired Lekavých kříž was re-erected in the park by the church on April 23, 2008.

Hiking Trails, Bridge, and River Landscape

The “Za Slovany a Vínečkem bílým” excursion begins on the village green in Mikulčice and leads directly to the Slovanské hradiště Mikulčice via the Vinařská podlužácká stezka. The return journey follows a blue-marked hiking route to Mikulčice. The route runs along paved roads and field tracks, is 18 km long, and has a low level of difficulty. In the surroundings of Mikulčice, the Lávka Velké Moravy pedestrian and cycle bridge connects the site with the Slovak part of the archaeological park. The Skařiny nature reserve is also located near the Slovanské hradiště, with Morava meanders and a floodplain forest containing breeding colonies of white storks and grey herons.

Winegrowing and Museums

Mikulčice has a long tradition of winegrowing. The Muzeum vinařství a vinohradnictví Mikulčice presents an exhibition on the history of winegrowing and the wine industry in a pillar barn and offers an insight into the operation of its fruit-pressing facility. At Chalupa Fanoše Mikuleckého, his birthplace, you can see exhibitions about his life and work, furnishings from the first half of the 20th century, and a preserved wooden tobacco drying barn. During current exhibitions, the museum is open on Sundays from 14:00 to 18:00; outside Sundays, it is accessible by telephone appointment.
