Hodonín District: Culture, Nature and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Hodonín District
The Hodonín District offers a wide variety of discoveries side by side: an open-air museum with more than 60 exhibits, a historic railway carriage, shifting sand dunes and protected meadow landscapes. There are also cycling routes, archaeological sites and regional wine traditions. This lets you plan your trip around the theme that interests you most, rather than trying to squeeze every place into a single itinerary.
Culture between the open-air museum and railway history
The Strážnice Open-Air Museum covers 16 hectares and contains more than 60 exhibits. It features examples of folk architecture, crafts and traditional farming; the history of viticulture is also among its themes. The site thus brings together architectural styles and everyday culture with a regional economic activity. Anyone interested in rural ways of life will find several aspects represented in one place, with the displays extending beyond architecture alone.
The Railway Carriage Museum in Ratíškovice offers a very different way to explore the past: it is housed in a historic railway carriage and covers the history of lignite mining and the railway network in the Hodonín District. The museum also rents pedal-powered rail carts for a three-kilometre ride around Ratíškovice. If this ride is important to your plans, check in advance whether rentals are currently available. An exhibition and a short ride thus offer two different ways to experience the area.
The archaeological site of Mikulčice offers another distinct historical focus. It preserves an early medieval settlement across around ten hectares and includes an archaeological exhibition. The Velké Moravy Footbridge connects the Czech and Slovak sections of the archaeological park. At Milotice State Chateau, you can rent historic costumes from the Baroque, Rococo and Romantic periods; the collection comprises around 190 costumes. As availability may vary, it is worth confirming this option before your visit.
Sand, meadows and trails in the landscape
Váté Písky is a several-kilometre-long belt of sand dunes and wind-blown sand deposits beside the railway. Strong winds shift the loose sand and shape the dunes; the area is therefore also known locally as the Moravian Sahara. Heat-loving insects and rare plants give the landscape an additional natural-history character. The local nature trail is 4.5 kilometres long and rated easy. It offers a designated route through the sandy landscape, while the Baťa Canal route covers a very different scale.
The cycling route along the Baťa Canal is more than 80 kilometres long and passes through Strážnice, Petrov, Sudoměřice, Rohatec and Hodonín. Marked Moravian wine trails and the Baťa Canal also connect the Hodonínsko region with other microregions. This makes the area a clear focus for a cycling holiday; the towns along the route also provide useful points of reference for planning your trip. Náklo offers views of the Chřiby and White Carpathian Mountains and can be reached via paved cycle paths from Ratíškovice, Vacenovice and Milotice.
The Čertoryje Nature Reserve is known for typical White Carpathian meadows and meadow-steppe habitats. These provide a home for communities of heat-loving plants and animals. Hodonínská Dúbrava protects a different type of landscape: a sandy woodland and steppe habitat with rare and endangered plant species. Both protected areas show that nature experiences in the Hodonín District are not limited to a single type of landscape.
Regional culture and places to visit
Folk songs, traditional costumes, dances and crafts are part of the cultural life of the Hodonínsko region. Celebrations associated with the area range from carnival and welcoming spring to vineyard openings, village festivals and wine harvest festivals; dates vary from event to event. The region’s food and drink culture also offers a range of highlights: Hodonínsko is associated with dry and sweet white, red and rosé wines, as well as sweet, juicy fruit from local orchards. Along the Podluží Wine Trail, you can meet winemakers and see examples of traditional folk architecture in the form of wine cellars.
For another nature-focused outing, the Dům přírody Hodonín visitor centre is in the Bažantnice area, near Hodonín Zoo and the Hodonínská Dúbrava National Natural Monument. The zoo covers just under six hectares and is home to almost 400 animals representing 100 species. Iodine-bromine mineral water is the main natural resource of Lázně Hodonín. If you are planning a specific visit to the visitor centre, check the latest opening information beforehand.
Choose accommodation to suit your travel interests
When looking for a hotel or other accommodation, it helps to decide on your main interest first: open-air museums, chateaux and archaeology lead to different outings than cycling or protected landscapes. If cycling routes are your priority, you can use the Baťa Canal and marked wine trails as guides for planning your trip. For culture enthusiasts, the Strážnice Open-Air Museum, the Railway Carriage Museum, Mikulčice and Milotice explore a range of historical themes. Then match the location of your accommodation to the places you plan to visit, rather than assuming that the region’s range of attractions tells you where individual properties are located.
