Šardice – Wine Routes, Village History and Moravian Tuscany

Šardice combines Moravian village history with viticulture, cycling paths and the landscape of Moravian Tuscany. The municipality belongs to the Slovácká wine region and is a starting point for an excursion into this distinctive landscape. Historical Sites and Exhibitions

One defining building is the Church of St Michael the Archangel. It is an early Baroque church built on older Gothic foundations and was remodelled into its present form in the 18th century. A powerful square tower with seven storeys stands on its western façade. The church thus displays, within a small area, the historical development that can also be traced in other historic buildings in Šardice.

The Augustinian Residence was built in 1740–1742 on the site of an older granary. During the summer months, the abbot Johann Gregor Mendel, described as the founder of genetics, stayed there. The residence currently houses a permanent exhibition of measuring instruments and scales, a farmhouse room, an exhibition of traditional costumes, a ceremonial hall, concert and lecture halls, exhibition rooms and an information centre. This creates a versatile cultural point of contact that brings together history, everyday culture and regional events.

Another vivid testimony to the local past is Chalúpka No. 97. The building was originally a farming homestead and is considered the oldest documented building in Šardice. Since 1 June 2019, it has been open as a museum of village life one hundred years ago. Visits are possible year-round by telephone appointment with the owner at 603 878 007.

Viticulture and Regional Tradition

The history of viticulture can also be explored concretely in Šardice. Loyderův sklep is a preserved wine-cellar building with a press house dating from 1745. If you are travelling with varied interests, this place offers, alongside the historic buildings, its own perspective on the region’s wine and working history.

The Moravian-Slovak Wine Route runs through Čejč, Hovorany, Karlín and Šardice. Along this route, visitors can expand their knowledge of individual grape varieties. Cycling Route, Views and Moravian Tuscany

The Mutěnická cycling route runs through Šardice. It is 65 km long and offers wide views after short climbs with a maximum elevation difference of 100 m. Those who want to include an active excursion in their trip are provided with a clearly described route focusing on the landscape. The Soudek viewpoint was built in 2017 in the Požární čtvrtě vineyard area as a place for passive recreation and lies on the Mutěnická Wine Route.

Several of the most beautiful photo locations in Moravian Tuscany are located in the cadastral area of Šardice. In addition, the excursion route “From Podluží to Hanácké Slovácko” passes through Šardice. The Chapel of St John of Nepomuk was built and consecrated in 2015 on the outskirts of Šardice along the Šardice–Hovorany cycling route. It contains a statue that originally stood in the chapel of the former summer residence of the Brno Augustinians, built between 1740 and 1742. In this way, the routes bring together landscapes, religious buildings and historical connections.
