Nechvalín

Nechvalín combines a distinctive wine-growing landscape with traces of a long history and vibrant local traditions. If you are looking for accommodation in Nechvalín, your stay is not only about visiting a Czech locality, but also about deciding whether you would like your trip to be shaped more by winegrowing, cultural monuments, archaeology, or regional customs.

Vineyards and the Kyjov Wine Trail

The local character includes the vineyard areas of “Borový čtvrtě,” “Kučky,” and “Lovecký.” The vineyards of Nechvalín lie on south- and west-facing slopes.

The Kyjov Wine Trail, a wine route, also passes through Nechvalín. For your travel planning, this creates a connection between the locality and a regional theme that is not limited to individual buildings: the vineyards, field names, and route together form part of Nechvalín’s distinctive character that can be documented. An overnight stay here is therefore especially suitable for a trip in which the landscape and winegrowing have their own place alongside historical discoveries.

The Knightly Fortress, Burial Ground, and Great Moravian Traces

Nechvalín has a history spanning several centuries. The locality is first mentioned in a foundation charter of Vizovice Monastery dated to 1261, which was later identified as forged. This date must therefore be read with the important qualification that it explicitly concerns a forged document; it is not evidence that Nechvalín was founded in that year.

Another historical point of reference is the castle-site area of the former knightly fortress of Nechvalín. It is listed as an immovable cultural monument. The former fortress was probably built as early as the first half of the 14th century.

The older traces become particularly vivid through the finds from the Nechvalín burial ground. Four iron swords, seven axes, six spears, spurs, as well as jewelry and vessels were found there. These finds suggest that Nechvalín was one of the important Great Moravian strongholds.

The Chapel and Regional Traditions

The Chapel of Saint Catherine is part of the locality’s visible history. It was completed on October 18, 1890, and consecrated on August 15, 1891, together with the cross standing beside it. A priest serving in Lovčice, Fr. Stanislav Kovář, travels to the chapel to celebrate services there. The locality is therefore documented through both the building itself and its liturgical connection to a member of the clergy serving there.

Local dress also preserves a distinctive part of the region’s identity. The surviving local half-Hanácký traditional costumes of Nechvalín are worn especially during the Kateřinské hody festival, held at the end of November. This tradition creates its own seasonal accent and differs clearly from the historical themes surrounding the knightly fortress and burial ground.
