Lovčice – Trails, Landscape and Local History

Lovčice lies on the southern edge of the Ždánický les Nature Park. The surrounding area brings together forests, orchards, fields and vineyards; Lovčice lies at the confluence of the Lovčický potok and the Jordánek stream. This combination of landscape, marked trails and small cultural monuments makes Lovčice a destination for anyone who would like to combine their stay with walks, nature observation and local history.

Hiking and Cycling Around Lovčice

A green-marked hiking trail, a cycling route and the Ždánickým lesem educational trail pass through Lovčice. For orientation on longer routes, the Žd. lesem educational trail is also interesting: it forms a closed circular route approximately 10 km long. This makes it possible to experience the landscape as a continuous route, without exploring the village solely through individual sights.

Another distinctive landmark is the Jordánek spring. It lies behind the pond beside a forest road along which a marked hiking trail, an educational trail and a cycling route run. The spring is therefore located in an area where different types of routes converge. At Kříž na Hraničkách, there are tourist seating areas and a picturesque view of the landscape of Moravian Tuscany. For a quieter break along the way, the Chapel of Our Lady in Roubaniny offers a view and seating in the shade of two old lime trees.

Churches, Chapels and Distinctive Local Details

In the centre of Lovčice stands the Church of Saints Peter and Paul within the enclosure of a former cemetery surrounded by a wall. The building was constructed in the Empire style in 1805. Its interior contains mosaics by Antonín Klouda of Prague. Another historic building in the village is the Fara vicarage, built in 1914 in the Modernist style. Its façade features a fresco of Christ as the Good Shepherd by the academic painter Jano Köhler.

Above Lovčice lies the chapel in Kučí, surrounded by fields. Large lime trees make it visible from a considerable distance. In the Roubaniny district, there is also the Chapel of Our Lady, a folk-style building probably dating from the 18th century.

Traditions and Unusual Discoveries

The Petropavelský výlet traditionally takes place in Lovčice in June. The traditional costume feast traditionally follows on the third Sunday in October. Both dates form part of the documented annual cycle of the village and give trip planning a seasonal reference, without suggesting that they represent a year-round events programme.

A special attraction is Ráj sukulentů u Honců. The collection is housed in a greenhouse near a former forester’s lodge and includes more than 1,000 species of succulents. In connection with Ráj sukulentů u Honců, Jaroslav Honc regularly holds exhibitions in Lovčice twice a year. This creates an unusual contrast with the hiking trails, churches and open landscapes: alongside nature and local history, the focus here is an extensive collection of plants.
