Labuty – Wine-Growing Settlement Between Three Stream Valleys

Labuty is an old wine-growing settlement in the valley of the Skalecký stream. The village lies at the confluence of the Skalecký stream, the Josefínský stream, and the Labutský stream, at the foot of Hačky Hill, which is 346 m high. Labuty thus combines a clearly recognizable local history with a landscape in which watercourses and gentle elevations are closely interconnected.

Stream Valleys and Varied Landscapes

Labuty lies in a gently hilly landscape crossed by the valleys of three local streams. The Labutský stream is particularly interesting, as it flows into the Skalecký stream as a left-bank tributary. Upstream from Labuty, it has a natural character: its varied channel has a stony bed and sediment deposits. It is also accompanied there by continuous, dense riparian vegetation consisting of alders, poplars, willows, and ash trees. In the built-up area, this scene changes significantly. There, the Labutský stream has a regulated trapezoidal channel with a muddy bed. The banks are steep and grass-covered and are partly characterized by ruderal vegetation. The contrast between the near-natural section upstream from the village and the regulated stream within the built-up area reveals the different aspects of the local waterscape.

Chapel, Crosses, and Local Remembrance

One of Labuty’s defining cultural monuments is the Chapel of the Virgin Mary with its bell tower. It dates from 1834 and was built on the site of an older wooden chapel. The year 1940 above the entrance commemorates the chapel’s last renovation. The village’s culture of remembrance is also connected with specific dates. The monument to Jindřich Škoda commemorates the headmaster who died in the Auschwitz concentration camp on 13 March 1943. The monument was unveiled on 11 November 1945. Several crosses complement the village landscape. A stone cross dating from 1904 stands at the intersection of the regional road and the village square. At the cadastral boundary with the municipality of Skalka, there is a cast-iron cross on a stone base dating from 1905. There is also a cross at the entrance to Labuty’s built-up area from the direction of Skalka.

Discoveries in the Podchřibí Microregion

Labuty is also part of the Cesta krajinou mikroregionu Podchřibí route. This wider route connects the municipalities of the microregion with the Chřiby Mountains and leads to interesting places and through the surrounding countryside. In spring 2021, rest facilities for pilgrims were installed in the Čtvrtky area of Labuty along the Cesta krajinou mikroregionu Podchřibí. The Rozhledna Súsedská observation tower is also located in the Podchřibí Microregion. It is 21 m high and has a total of 99 steps. Together with the route and the local cultural monuments, this viewpoint broadens the scope of a journey that considers Labuty not only as an individual settlement but also in the context of the Podchřibí landscape.
