Letonice: Natural Landscapes and Local History

Letonice offers a travel experience in which nature and local history stand closely side by side. One of the village’s landmarks is St. Nicholas Church. At the same time, the Větrníky National Nature Monument lies in the eastern part of Letonice’s cadastral territory. St. Nicholas Church is mentioned as early as 1235. Its importance for Letonice therefore reaches far back in time, making it an especially illustrative starting point if you would like to learn about the village’s history. This picture is complemented by the Baroque Chapel of the Seven Sorrows of Mary, which dates from the last third of the 18th century. Another historical detail is the statue of St. Joseph from the 19th century.

The village square also offers an encounter with part of the local history: it is home to a memorial to the victims of the First World War. The square thus combines an everyday connection to the village with a remembrance of a momentous event. Visitors with a stronger interest in the more distant past may find the archaeological discoveries from Letonice interesting. In Hájek, this includes a site featuring Gravettian points. In addition, a significant archaeological find from Letonice gave its name to a type of vessel associated with the Corded Ware culture. Both references show that the village’s history did not begin only with the visible buildings of later centuries.

Letonice also preserves its own festival tradition. Antonínské hody is held every year; the tradition was established in the 1950s. If you would like to combine your stay with a local custom, this regularly held event is one of the village’s distinctive cultural features. Alongside the permanently visible churches, chapels, statues and monuments, it represents a living form of local tradition.

For a change of pace between sightseeing and physical activity, the swimming pool complex in Letonice also has volleyball courts. Together with the opportunities for hiking and cycling in the surrounding area, this creates a range of options for planning different days, without limiting Letonice to just one type of excursion.
