Drnovice U Vyškova: Views, History and Trails

Drnovice U Vyškova combines a distinctive viewpoint with local history and trails through the landscape. The Chocholík Lookout Tower on the hill of the same name is particularly prominent: the 26-metre-high steel tower has 144 steps and offers views of the surrounding area. In suitable visibility conditions, the view extends as far as the peaks of the Beskids. The height of the tower and the number of steps describe the structure and the ascent separately. This gives you a clearly recognisable destination in Drnovice for a shared outing that combines views and physical activity.

The Chocholík Lookout Tower and the Wetland

The Chocholík Lookout Tower is freely accessible all year round. It can be reached via a paved path from the local cemetery and marked hiking trails. To the north of the hill, between fields, lies the natural feature known as “Mokřad pod Chocholíkem”. It is a shallow depression in the terrain covered with reeds, surrounded by grass, shrubs and trees. The wetland is not a protected area and probably has no official name; the designation “Mokřad pod Chocholíkem” therefore describes the name used for this landscape feature.

There are two documented ways to get there. From the Drnovice Na Žlebě bus stop, you can reach the wetland on foot via a blue-marked trail in approximately 1.9 kilometres. From the cemetery, a yellow-marked field path leads there in approximately 1.3 kilometres. This field path is suitable for bicycles of all types. The access routes therefore differ in terms of starting point, marking, length and suitability for cycling; for the lookout tower, however, a paved path leads from the cemetery. At approximately 1.9 kilometres, the blue-marked trail is longer than the yellow field path at approximately 1.3 kilometres. This allows you to include the natural site in a hike or bike ride without mixing up the two route details: each refers to a different starting point.

Church, Castle and Local Culture

The architectural history of Drnovice also gives a stay its own character. The parish Church of St Lawrence has a late Gothic core. Its presbytery and nave were extended by a tower in the 16th century. The church is also associated with a pilgrimage to Saint Lawrence, which takes place on 10 August. Two heart-leaved lime trees stand by the church; they are associated with 21 January 2004. The church building thus combines a late Gothic core with an extension from the 16th century; the pilgrimage is additionally associated with the fixed date of 10 August.

Drnovice Castle was built by Jan Mundy between 1866 and 1869. From 1899 to 1947, it housed a care facility for 80 women. Two small-leaved lime trees on Old Street in the town centre are associated with 4 October 2010 and add to the locality’s distinctive features. The two lime tree sites are located in different parts of the village: by the church and on Old Street in the town centre.

Drnovice Cultural Centre was used for exhibitions, conferences, discussion groups and performances by local amateur actors. These have a long-standing tradition in the municipality. Cycle Route 5071 runs via Rousínov, Habrovany, Nemojany, Pístovice, Ježkovice, Opatovice, Drnovice and Vyškov, providing additional orientation for anyone wishing to include the village in a longer bike ride. The route extends beyond Drnovice and continues through several other places to Vyškov.
