Ivanovice na Hané combines a distinctive cultural landscape with an unusually rich history. The town lies on the Haná River beside the D1 motorway and the Brno–Přerov railway line. This makes it a place where historical discoveries can be combined with an excursion into the gently rolling Haná landscape when planning your trip.

Historic Buildings in the Townscape

The castle of Ivanovice na Hané is a late Renaissance castle with a valuable arcaded courtyard. Its construction history dates back to 1608: the Bukůvka family began building the Renaissance castle at that time. The construction was carried out by Antonín Pariz from Brno, assisted by master stonemason Jan Foncun. However, one clear limitation is important for planning a visit: the castle is not open to the public. Its historical significance therefore cannot be equated with that of a publicly accessible castle tour. At the head of the town square stands the Church of St. Andrew, an important landmark of the town and one of its historic monuments. It has a Gothic core, was rebuilt in the second half of the 17th century, and altered in the 18th century. The church has a Baroque appearance; its bell tower dates from 1759 and bears Baroque sculptures. The castle lies to its southeast, so the two buildings are connected in the town’s historic layout, without this implying anything about the castle’s accessibility. Smaller buildings also tell stories of the past. A cemetery chapel was built in 1824 in the Classicist style. The year 1824 is also recorded for the Chapel of St. Joseph in the cemetery; beneath its arcaded gallery lies the family crypt of František, Margrave of Lusignan. The cultural picture is completed by the sculpture ensemble of St. Florian, a High Baroque religious complex dating from 1721 to 1729. On a monumental pedestal stand statues of St. Florian, St. Wenceslas, John the Baptist, and the Guardian Angel.

Traces of Jewish History and Civic Tradition

At the eastern edge of Ivanovice na Hané lies a Jewish cemetery with tombstones dating from the early 17th century. The Jewish community in Ivanovice na Hané no longer existed after 1940. The cemetery thus points to a long history of Jewish life and, at the same time, to its end in the town. The development of urban trade is also historically documented. In 1507, Ivanovice was granted the privilege of holding an annual fair. In 1547, Ferdinand I approved a third annual fair on the Tuesday after Pentecost. These dates give the town’s history a specific chronological outline, without implying anything about events held today.

Nature Experiences and Excursion Planning

A striking natural monument is located in the town park: an approximately 340-year-old black locust is one of the oldest surviving trees of its kind in Moravia. Those who would like to discover the landscape as well as the buildings can plan a 32.4-kilometre circular trail. It begins in Ivanovice na Hané and leads through the gently rolling Haná landscape with ponds. The starting point is on Mlýnská Street. Bus connections run to Vyškov and Brno; the location on the D1 motorway and the Brno–Přerov railway line also shape the local transport links. Ivanovice na Hané therefore offers different focuses for a trip: historic architecture, Jewish cultural heritage, religious art, or a longer circular trail through the Haná landscape. Depending on their interests, families can make a more cultural and historical stay or an excursion featuring a landscape experience the focus of their visit. When choosing accommodation, the main consideration is which of these focuses should define the stay and whether combining it with other places in the region is desired.
