Šitbořice – Hradisko, cycling routes and village traditions

Šitbořice combines a distinctive landscape with archaeological traces, lively village festivals and a strong cycle-ball tradition. The village lies where the Dyjskosvratecký úval transitions into the foothills of the Ždánický les. Steep hills and narrow ravines shape the surroundings and give a stay a clear landscape character. At the same time, several special discoveries are located directly in Šitbořice: Hradisko, the Church of svatého Mikuláše, the Stará škola and Štengar mineral water.

Hradisko and the landscape of Šitbořice

Hradisko is an important archaeological site in Šitbořice. A central hill, a ditch and an inner rampart have been preserved; they are among the remains of a probably medieval fortification. This makes it possible to understand at this site how closely the history of the municipality is connected with its landscape, without limiting the visit to a single building.

The low hill lies in the middle of Šitbořice. According to legend, it is associated with a small castle; its circular shape is reminiscent of a Celtic fortification. Several archaeological finds have been made there. For visitors interested in early settlement traces and local traditions, Hradisko therefore offers two different ways of approaching the site: the visible terrain features and the stories surrounding the place.

Cycling, cycle ball and events

Two cycling routes pass through Šitbořice: the Velkopavlovická vinařská cyklostezka and the Šaratice–Šitbořice cycling route (No. 5114). Those who wish to explore the village by bicycle can choose between these two cycling routes. The routes thus complement the historical and cultural themes of the village with an active form of discovery.

Cycle sport is also visible in Šitbořice away from the routes. TJ Sokol Šitbořice and the municipality organize the TURNAJ MISTRŮ SVĚTA cycle-ball tournament every year in February. International cycle-ball tournaments have been held regularly in Šitbořice since 1988. The difference between an ordinary stay and a visit around this event is therefore significant when choosing the travel period: the tournament is one of the village’s recurring events, while the cycling routes offer another perspective regardless of it.

Local traditions also include Stavění máje at the end of April. The maypole is carried in a procession through the village to the Sokolovna, where it is erected together. A dance at the Sokolovna is then part of the tradition. During Svatováclavské hody, a traditional-costume procession also heads to the Sokolovna; a dance celebration then takes place there. The two occasions show different sides of community life: Stavění máje is associated with spring, while Svatováclavské hody is associated with a traditional-costume procession followed by a celebration.

The church, Stará škola and Štengar

The Kostel svatého Mikuláše is a single-nave building in the Neo-Romanesque style. It was built in 1910–1913 on the site of an original medieval church. The building thus represents a specific construction phase in the village’s history and, at the same time, the continuity of the church site. The church is used daily; several hundred members of the congregation attend Sunday services.

“Jaro na staré škole” offers another form of cultural experience. This traditional spring afternoon takes place at the Stará škola in Šitbořice and combines creative activities, social encounters and an Easter atmosphere. Those who, during a trip, want not only to visit sights but also to learn about recurring local customs will find a distinct event experience here.

Štengar, a hydrogen sulfide-containing mineral water in Šitbořice, is also part of the local profile. It has a sulfane concentration of 5.50–9.50 mg/l H2S. лечебные baths have been established in the renovated Orlovna community center. These facts complement the historical and festive themes with a special feature of the village, without requiring a specific travel itinerary.

Getting there and choosing where to stay

From Brno, you can reach Šitbořice via road II/380 in the direction of Hodonín. About 25 km from Brno, turn right after the municipality of Těšany. Šitbořice is therefore particularly interesting as a destination when you want to combine the village’s own special features: Hradisko and the church represent history, the cycling routes offer active excursions, and cycle ball and village festivals represent regularly recurring events. Depending on the travel period, this can create a different focus.
