Perná

Perná lies at the foot of the Pavlovské vrchy hills, between limestone cliffs and vineyards. The areas adjoining the village belong to the Pálava Protected Landscape Area. Perná therefore combines a distinctive landscape with an unusually rich history: protected nature, winegrowing, religious buildings, village monuments and the romantic ruins of Sirotčí hrad Castle all meet around the village. This allows you to discover Perná from different perspectives: through its landscape, winegrowing and surviving evidence of the village’s history.

Landscape and trails around Perná

The western part of Perná’s cadastral area is planted with vineyards as well as apricot and peach orchards. This combination gives the village its distinctive landscape character: vineyards stand alongside orchards, while limestone cliffs rise at the foot of the Pavlovské vrchy hills. In the parts of the Pálava landscape adjoining Perná, there is a dense network of marked hiking trails, often supplemented by educational trail panels. Those wishing to combine different ways of exploring the area during their stay will therefore find both orientation within the landscape and explanations along the trails.

Nature itself is also a reason to explore the surroundings more closely. Numerous protected plant and animal species occur in the parts of the Pálava landscape adjoining Perná. The romantic ruins of Sirotčí hrad Castle rise above Perná. Together with the marked trails, they form a characteristic contrast between open vineyards and orchards, limestone cliffs and a historic ruin landscape.

Church, chapels and village monuments

The parish Church of Saint Nicholas stands in the village centre. It was built between 1510 and 1583 on the site of an earlier chapel. Its square tower is 42.5 metres high. It is complemented by a lower, tower-like round structure dating from 1767. Inside, a historic stone baptismal font from the first half of the 15th century has been preserved. These details make the church a particularly vivid testimony to the village’s long history.

The Chapel of Saint Anthony of Padua, built in 1652, is located northwest of Perná. It was associated with famous and heavily attended pilgrimages; in 1786, the pilgrimage was abolished by an imperial decree. The village itself is also home to the Trinity group on the village square, dating from 1865, and the New Empire-style fountain from 1902, both of which form part of its historic character. The fountain served as a watering place for horses, pointing to an earlier function of the village square.

Winegrowing and local tradition

Winegrowing in Perná dates back to the 14th century. A special connection between the village’s history and winegrowing was established in 1946 with the founding of a wine-breeding station. In 1979, its first major success at the national level was the breeding of the “Pálava” grape variety. This history is important for understanding the village: here, Pálava refers not only to the adjoining protected landscape, but also to a grape variety whose origins are connected with Perná.

The village’s traditional calendar of events includes the traditional costumed Bartolomějské hody celebrations.
