Discover Pouzdřany
Pouzdřany combines a significant natural monument with historic buildings and a clear connection to the Moravian wine landscape. If you are looking for accommodation with a variety of opportunities for discovery, you can explore the landscape, local history, cycling route and winegrowing as distinct themes here. Pouzdřany does not have one uniform character as a destination: the natural area represents protected dry landscapes, the town centre represents architectural history, and the Moravská vinná stezka represents an active connection through the region.
A natural monument with special habitats
Pouzdřanská step–Kolby is designated as a national natural monument and covers 157.1302 hectares. The area was first designated on 10 May 1946. To understand the character of the landscape, it is not only the name of the protected area that matters, but also its documented diversity of habitats: preserved habitats include narrow-leaved and broad-leaved dry grasslands (Bromion erecti), dry herb fringes (Geranion sanguinei), tall mesophilous and xerothermic scrub (Berberidion), low xerothermic scrub (Prunion spinosae), Pannonian oak-hornbeam forests (Primulo veris-Carpinetum), and Pannonian thermophilous oak forests on loess (Aceri tataricae-Quercion).
The many specialist terms describe different plant communities, from dry grasslands and herb fringes to scrub and thermophilous forests. For choosing where to stay, this primarily means that Pouzdřany appeals to travellers who do not want to separate a place with a clearly recognisable natural profile from culture and local history.
Church, Renaissance house and chateau
Several historic landmarks are concentrated in Pouzdřany. The parish church of St Nicholas is a late Gothic building dating from 1498. It was probably fortified originally and was remodelled in the 17th and 18th centuries. Nearby stands Renaissance House No. 115. Its ground floor preserves a mázhaus and rooms with groin vaults.
The chateau, too, reflects several building phases. It was originally built as a Renaissance structure at the end of the 16th century. It was later remodelled and extended in the Baroque period and in the 19th century. Its U-shaped floor plan defines the complex; an arcaded gallery has been preserved on the ground floor of the courtyard. Together with the church and Renaissance house, this creates a townscape in which late Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and later alterations can be distinguished. Pouzdřany is therefore particularly interesting for those interested in culture when the focus is not just on a single building, but on the development of a place.
Cycling route, winegrowing and travel
The Moravská vinná stezka passes through Pouzdřany and, in the Hustopečsko microregion, forms part of a route through 16 municipalities. On the section between Pouzdřany and Popice, there is an opportunity to view the Pouzdřanská step national natural monument. The route thus directly connects the town's name with its characteristic landscape, without requiring nature and cycling to be considered separately.
Vinařství Kolby is part of the region's connection with wine. The winery grows nine white and three blue grape varieties on nearly 40 hectares. This specific scale and the division by grape variety give winegrowing in Pouzdřany a tangible profile.
Pouzdřany railway station is integrated into the IDS JMK integrated transport system. For your planning, this means that, in addition to the town's location, there is documented integration into the regional transport system.
