Mikulov Between Culture, Nature and Wine

Mikulov combines Jewish heritage, distinctive elevations, protected nature and Moravian wine culture. The town therefore offers a range of discoveries: historic buildings and exhibitions, nature trails through remarkable landscapes, short routes for cyclists, and wine-tasting experiences at wineries, in wine cellars and vinotheques.

The Castle and Jewish Heritage

Mikulov Castle stands on a distinctive rocky promontory and has been a highly visible landmark of the town for several centuries. Today, it is home to the Regional Museum in Mikulov and houses several interesting exhibitions. The history of the castle also includes a library with around 11,000 volumes.

The Mikulov Synagogue is the only surviving synagogue in Moravia of the so-called Polish type and essentially dates back to the mid-16th century. In the historic Jewish quarter, 45 of the buildings that have survived to this day have been protected as immovable cultural monuments. Rabbinical Hill, the most valuable and at the same time most visited part of the Mikulov Jewish Cemetery, contains gravestones of rabbis from Mikulov and Moravian chief rabbis.

Other distinctive landmarks include Kozí hrádek, a two-storey late Gothic artillery tower built on Kozí vrch in the 15th century, and the Mikulov MJ-S 29 “SVAH” fortress. It features a visitor exhibition with weapons and other equipment and armaments of the Czechoslovak People’s Army.

Protected Landscapes and Nature Trails

Svatý kopeček has been designated a nature reserve because of the rich presence of protected and rare plant and animal species. Its southern slopes are home to a species-rich rocky steppe. The Svatý kopeček nature trail consists of a total of 11 information panels and includes a viewpoint above the quarry.

The Na Turold Cave is also located in a protected setting: it lies in the nature reserve of 385-metre-high Turold, which is situated on the northern outskirts of Mikulov. Turold thus complements the historic sights with a distinctly natural focus.

Routes for Different Day Plans

For a short bike ride, the “Mikulov – Around Mikulov, Svatý kopeček (Holy Hill)” route is available. It is 4.8 km long and has a difficulty rating of 1. The “In the Footsteps of the Anabaptists” nature trail runs for 1.5 km through the town’s streets, is easily accessible and not demanding. Five panels provide information about the short but fruitful period during which Anabaptists settled in Mikulov from 1526 onward; the introductory panel stands in the town centre next to the Dietrichstein burial chapel.

Another elevated experience is offered by the bell tower of St. Wenceslas Church: it can be climbed via 135 steps and offers a panoramic view of the whole of Mikulov.
