Mostek – Nature and Culture in the Czech Republic

Mostek combines protected nature with an unusually dense concentration of cultural and historical traces. At the southern edge of Mostek’s cadastral area, where the municipality extends as far as the Tichá Orlice, lies the Hemže-Mýtkov Nature Reserve. In the town and its immediate surroundings, a medieval reconciliation cross, a stone cross and the remains of a chateau also recall various chapters of regional history. Mostek therefore offers different points of interest for a stay in which you would like to combine landscape and culture.

Hemže-Mýtkov on the Tichá Orlice

The Hemže-Mýtkov Nature Reserve consists of south-facing slopes above the river. Scree forests grow there on marl outcrops, and a species-rich forest flora has also been documented. Molluscs and amphibians occur in the adjacent oxbow lakes of the Tichá Orlice. The area is therefore interesting not only because of its protected status, but also because of the transition between river landscape, slopes, forest and oxbow lakes.

For orientation in the landscape, cycle route 4061 is significant: it provides access to the nature reserve from Choceň and continues towards Česká Třebová. A waterfall may appear in the Hemže-Mýtkov gorge when water levels are higher. This detail shows that the character of the gorge can change depending on the water level, without implying that this is a permanent natural phenomenon.

Medieval Monuments in Mostek

One of the most prominent cultural monuments is the Mostek reconciliation cross. It is protected as a cultural monument and is considered a rare surviving medieval monument associated with a tragic local event. The cross stands between Mostek and Brandýs nad Orlicí on Road 312, about 250 metres beyond the town in the direction of Brandýs nad Orlicí. Anyone wishing to place this historical connection in a broader context will find another stone cross in the town, known as Kříž v Mostku. It stands on a four-sided stone pedestal; its rear records its erection in 1842 and restorations in 1881, 1894, 1923, 1937, 1970 and 2008.

The history of the chateau is also preserved in the townscape. Opposite the former grocery shop stands a capital from the chateau, whose construction began in 1724. The remaining ruins of the chateau begun near Mostek were dismantled by farmers from Mostek in 1874. The capital and the chateau remains that were later removed thus represent a historic complex of which the complete building no longer survives today.

Historical Traces in Sudličkova Lhota

Another focus of cultural history lies in Sudličkova Lhota. The Sudličkova distillery is located in the rooms of a medieval manor house. The site is associated with the first surviving records of alcohol distillation, dating from the 15th century. Sudličkova Lhota is also home to a medieval agricultural farmstead from the 14th century, which also included a manor house. The distillery, farmstead and manor house thus offer a glimpse into different historical uses, rather than only representative chateau architecture.
