Vlčkovice: Rock Formations, Hiking Trails and Village Traditions
Accommodation in Vlckovice
The Studenské skály rock formations lie around two kilometres south of Vlčkovice. A walkable tourist trail leads to this geological site, where a rocky gorge reaches around 20 metres in height in places. The distinctive rock formation makes this outing a particular highlight for a stay where you enjoy exploring on foot. Trail conditions may change; check them before setting out.
Rocky Landscape and Trails
Studený vrch is one of the mountains surrounding Vlčkovice. A red-marked hiking route passes through the village. The Mladkov–Letohrad route via Studený vrch also passes through Vlčkovice and then climbs the mountain. This route is also suitable for cycling. These are different points of reference for planning your trip: the red-marked trail passes through the village, while the named route then climbs Studený vrch. At the Studenské skály, by contrast, the focus is on the rock formation south of Vlčkovice.
The 2026 edition of the “Toulání kolem Orlice” event also includes Vlčkovice on its 40 km route. Alongside the trails through the village and up to Studený vrch described above, this gives you a longer event route to consider. Which of these options you include in your stay depends on whether you would rather focus on the rock formation, the climb or a longer route.
Village Traditions and Culture
The annual “Stavění máje” tradition takes place on a set date: on 30 April, residents gather in the village square to decorate and erect a maypole. If you can choose your travel dates freely, you can plan your stay around this village event. This makes it different from the hiking destinations, which are not tied to a particular day each year.
Another cultural and historical detail is the “Smírčí kříž ve Vlčkovicích” (reconciliation cross) in the cadastral area of Vlčkovice u Mladkova. Its inscription bears the year 1750. The lower part features a relief of a skull and crossed bones. The inscription and motif give the monument a distinct, recognisable appearance and complement the annual village tradition with a permanent historical feature.
Services are held in the Chapel of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Vlčkovice on the second Saturday of each month: at 17:00 during winter time and at 19:00 during summer time. The times were updated on 4 March 2026. If you are planning to attend a service, check the latest information with the parish beforehand.
Choose Accommodation Based on Your Travel Plans
Fixed events may determine your travel plans: the village tradition in April or a service at the chapel. If you mainly want to hike or cycle, you can compare the Studenské skály and the route via Studený vrch as different options. If a set village event matters to you, your travel dates are key; for an active trip, the route you want and its direction take priority. That way, you can first settle your plans and then look for suitable accommodation more easily.
