Discover Morchenstern: Culture, Nature and Winter Experiences

Nature and Outdoor Activities in Smržovka

Morchenstern is an appealing destination if you would like to combine nature experiences, winter sports and culture during a trip. Městský lesopark Smržovka is a popular place for walks and independent leisure activities. Rare trees from several regions of the world add a distinctive botanical character. However, their exact origin can no longer be determined today. For an active change of pace, DiscGolfPark Smržovka has a nine-hole course.

Winter Activities: Cross-Country Skiing, Downhill Skiing and Tobogganing

In winter, several different activities are available in Smržovka. The cross-country skiing area is around three kilometres long and is groomed for skating and two classic tracks. The cross-country trails comprise three kilometres of mechanically groomed trails with connections to further routes. The Filip ski area has a 500-metre-long downhill run with a vertical drop of 100 metres. The Přírodní sáňkařská dráha Smržovka offers another form of winter sport: The almost four-kilometre-long natural toboggan run follows prepared forest paths from the Černá studnice viewpoint to the Filip ski lift in Smržovka.

Museums, Crafts and an Architectural Landmark

The cultural attractions also make the area varied. Muzeum obrněné techniky Smržovka currently contains around 30 exhibits. Driving demonstrations and battle reenactments take place on the approximately 1.5-hectare grounds. Muzeum místní historie a výstavní síň Smržovka is located in the rooms of Smržovka’s Zámeček. At Muzeum panenek Smržovka, you can see an exhibition of 200 German, Russian, Spanish and Czech dolls, as well as other toys.

The Church of the Holy Archangel Michael in Smržovka is a late Baroque landmark of the wider surrounding area and is considered an important architectural monument in the Jablonecko region. It is open for individual visits during major city events. Another regional speciality is the traditional production of costume jewellery and glass from glassworks, which has survived in Smržovka to this day. Historical rooms, collections, architecture and living craft traditions therefore stand side by side.

Hiking and the Right Trip Idea

The Kolem Smržovky hiking route begins at Smržovka railway station, leads to the Černá Studnice viewpoint and returns to Smržovka via the toboggan run. It therefore combines a clearly described circular route with a viewpoint destination and a section on the natural toboggan run. For an active outing with several stops, the circular route provides clear orientation: The railway station marks a distinct starting point, the viewpoint is a destination along the way, and the return route via the toboggan run gives the circuit a clear conclusion. If you would like to focus more on culture, the museums and the church offer a different emphasis. Smržovka is located in the recreational area of the Jizera Mountains and is a centre of summer and winter tourism. Depending on your interests, you can therefore make walks, hiking, winter sports, museums or regional traditions the focus of your trip.
