Chýně: History, Trails and Nature at Strahovský Pond

If you are looking for a place with a tangible history and a variety of trails, Chýně offers both. Chýně is best known for its iron smelting furnaces. At the same time, trails lead to ponds, streams and landscaped areas, while historical traces reach back to the Middle Ages and even further.

The first written mention of Chýně dates from 1273 and records the settlement as property of the Strahov Monastery. The Premonstratensians owned Chýně almost continuously. Exceptions included short periods during the Hussite Wars, after the Battle of White Mountain and during communist nationalization. Older traces have also been found: in 2011, a Celtic semi-subterranean settlement pit was discovered in Chýně.

Trails for Walks and Cycling Tours

Completed in 2024, Cesta Třetí skála is a 537-meter-long, surfaced farm track intended primarily for pedestrians and cyclists. It connects the paved road between Chýně and Hájek with an unpaved path from Bašta Pond. This makes it possible to explore the landscape along a clearly described connection, without equating the different sections of the route.

The landscape around the Litovický Stream is undergoing intensive restoration and reclamation. The stream rises west of Chýně and flows through Bašta Pond within the cadastral area. The surroundings invite pleasant walks and complement the surfaced Cesta Třetí skála connection with a landscape-oriented area.

Strahovský Pond Between Nature and Events

The Strahovský Pond area was developed through the expansion of embankments and surrounding areas, the planting of shrubs and trees, mowing, cleaning and fish stocking. These measures created good living conditions for endangered animal species, while the natural yet park-like character is intended to be preserved and further developed. The site’s historical roots in Chýně date back to 1410. Recreational fishing there is non-commercial and takes place primarily according to the “catch and release” principle.

The “Chýňská pětka” running competition also takes place at Strahovský Pond. Pohoda FEST Chýně began in 2016 with a concert on the banks of Strahovský Pond and subsequently developed into a full-fledged festival. The Chýňská padesátka, held repeatedly, was an educational hike from the lowest to the highest point of the cadastral area of Chýně.

Getting Your Bearings When Traveling There

Several transport connections are available for your planning: Bus routes 347 and 358 connect Chýně with Prague Metro Line B at Zličín station and Metro Line A at Motol station. Railway line 122 bypasses Chýně; the two stops, Chýně and Chýně-jih, opened in 2014. The restaurant at Pivovarský Dvůr Chýně can be reached by car and public transport. It has its own parking lot for more than 20 cars and can also accommodate a larger bus.
