Discover Holubice: Frescoes, Chapels and Hiking Trail

Holubice combines remarkable ecclesiastical buildings, traces of earlier history, community life and a marked hiking trail. This creates a destination where cultural discoveries can be combined with an active excursion and distinctive local sites.

Romanesque Frescoes and Baroque Ecclesiastical Buildings

The most significant monument in Holubice is the Romanesque Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. Original Romanesque frescoes have been preserved inside. Holubice therefore places not only a single historic building at the centre of attention, but also an art-historical rarity: the frescoes preserve an immediate impression of Romanesque sacred design. The church thus combines a significant building with preserved Romanesque art. Compared with the Baroque chapels built later, this creates a chronological arc from Romanesque sacred design to the High Baroque.

The Chapel of Saint Gotthard has a different historical character. It is a significant example of small-scale High Baroque ecclesiastical art dating from 1769 and helps define the village centre. Those interested in smaller ecclesiastical buildings and their impact on the villagescape will find here a clear contrast to the Romanesque Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. The year of construction, 1769, clearly distinguishes the chapel chronologically from the Romanesque church; its position in the village centre combines historical context with a Baroque accent.

The grounds of the Chapel of Saint Michael include the chapel, a retaining wall and a staircase. The Chapel of Saint Michael in Kozinec is a Baroque chapel built by Jesuits in 1739. Its interior features a simple dome and figurative fresco painting. The combination of retaining wall, staircase and chapel makes the grounds perceptible as an architectural ensemble and complements the Baroque interior with a distinctive external framework. South of Holubice, on Ers Hill in the forest, there is also an elongated, presumably prehistoric burial mound. It measures approximately 30 × 18 metres. These approximate dimensions give the burial mound a concrete spatial form, while its prehistoric classification remains open.

Hiking Trail, Sport and Special Places

A yellow-marked hiking trail leads via Kozinec to Holubice. Those wishing to explore Holubice on foot can use this route for orientation. This makes it possible to incorporate the hike into your own daily plans without assuming a specific duration or a fixed pace.

Community life is also part of the villagescape. In the 2025/2026 season, TJ Sokol Holubice has a men's team in the Praha-západ DECATHLON District League (8th League) and has youth teams ranging from Minipřípravka to youth level. Following the opening of the new facilities in February 2026, all training sessions and home matches of TJ Sokol Holubice should take place at the home sports ground. Community life thus extends from current competitive play to several youth levels.

The Rotunda of Holubice can be used in the Holubice cadastral area as a venue for wedding ceremonies for a fee of CZK 3,000. The rotunda thus complements the historic and ecclesiastical sites with a practical use for a special occasion.
