Úhonice between Church, Cultural Monument and Landscape

Úhonice combines a clearly recognisable local history with a diverse landscape. Extensive woodland areas lie in the west of the area; west of Úhonice there is also terrain with pronounced relief and a valley towards the ponds. A widely visible landmark of the village is the Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary. Church and Local History

The Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary was built in 1896–1898 in the Neo-Romanesque style, based on plans by Eduard Sochor. It replaced an older Gothic church dating from 1615. A Baroque cemetery chapel from 1799 stands beside the church. This means that different periods of construction and forms of sacred architecture can be seen together in a single part of the village.

Úhonice is mentioned in 1143 as a parish village near Unhošť. Since the foundation of the monastery in 1143, the village belonged to Strahov Monastery; the abbots established a parish church there before 1358. The local history of monuments also includes the niche chapel of Saint Florian, which is designated an immovable cultural monument. The built-up area of Úhonice is designated as an archaeological area of category UAN I, dating from the Middle Ages to the modern era. The village’s history thus extends from early ecclesiastical connections to the visible monuments in today’s built-up area.

Steam Mill and Protected Trees

The Úhonice steam mill with a pond on Jenečská and Na Hrázi No. 81 is designated an immovable cultural monument. It was founded around 1907 by Václav Klatovský, and grain was milled at the mill for forty years. The mill thus adds a focus on rural economic and technological history to the sacred and archaeological history. Four notable trees in Úhonice are also designated as protected memorial trees.

Special Connections and a Documented Visiting Date

The façade of the Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary is oriented towards the Franciscan Monastery in Hájek; this relationship is understood as a spiritual unity. The ecclesiastical connection of the Úhonice church therefore extends beyond the immediate village area. As part of Noc kostelů on 29 May 2026, the church was open for visits from 17:00 to 21:00. There was also a guided tour of the church, tower and organ. The event thus combined a visit to the building with insights into several of its areas.
