Kelč between a nature trail and a historic heritage conservation zone

The Kelč nature trail comprises two circular routes that can be explored on foot or by bicycle. The shorter circular route passes through the town’s heritage conservation, or historic, zone, while the longer circular route follows significant landscape features in the area surrounding the town. This provides visitors with a choice between a route shaped by cultural history and one with a stronger focus on the landscape.

Historic places in the townscape

The square known as Náměstí is part of Kelč’s historic heritage conservation zone. The square is home to the birth houses of the linguist and Slavist František Pastrnek and the Moravian Enlightenment thinker and writer Tomáš Fryčaj. The heritage conservation zone also includes the core of the New Town and the Renaissance chateau complex with a landscape park.

The Kelč fortress was converted into a Renaissance chateau in the 1580s. Its current status is important when planning a visit: the chateau is currently not open to the public. Its historical context nevertheless remains a defining topic in the history of the town and on routes through Kelč.

Church of St Catherine and a remarkable bridge

The Church of St Catherine brings together several historical periods. Its medieval origins have been documented, but the present church was built between 1776 and 1784. Since 10 February 1992, it has been protected as a listed building. The church is used for services and concerts, making it part of both Kelč’s architectural history and its contemporary cultural life.

Another prominent structure is the original stone bridge from 1912. It is decorated with four pylons and hemispheres and is one of the few surviving concrete bridges in the region. This detail makes the bridge a destination in its own right when sightseeing in the town, rather than merely a crossing along the way.

Museum with telephone reservations required

The museum in Kelč is located in the former old school building at Kelč 290. It contains a room dedicated to the Křička siblings and a permanent exhibition on pipe-making. The museum also has the permanent exhibition “In the Footsteps of Keleč Pipe-Making”. Visits must be arranged exclusively by telephone at least one day in advance. This information is essential when planning a museum visit, as the museum should not be included in an itinerary without this advance reservation.

Exploring Kelč by bicycle

For cycling travellers, the “To Kelč Castle from Valmez” tour passes through Kelč. It is suitable for e-bikes, gravel bikes and mountain bikes, and includes a stop in Kelč to see the square.
