Valašská Bystřice is a destination for days that combine activity and culture. The municipality has a varied, mountainous landscape. There is a small lookout tower on Búřov; a ski area is located in Valašská Bystřice, and there is a golf course near Chata Búřov. In the village, the Památník Marie Bognerové and the Portáš graves offer insights into art and history. You can tailor your stay to a wide range of interests.

Views, skiing, and golf on Búřov

A small wooden lookout tower with views stands on Búřov. Admission is free, and the tower is freely accessible to the public. The Búřov ski area is located in Valašská Bystřice. According to one description, it is suitable for beginner and advanced skiers. Check whether the area is operating at the time of your trip before setting out.

There is a golf course near Chata Búřov, built and operated according to municipal plans. Check its current availability before setting out. This gives you several options for planning your day on Búřov: the views, winter sports, and golf appeal to different interests, so you do not have to commit to just one kind of outing.

Hiking trails with different routes

A marked hiking route to Búřov follows a paved road intended for vehicles. It is passable with a stroller, but has a steep ascent. So, being stroller-accessible does not mean the route is flat. It is helpful to consider both details when planning.

The Portášská trail starts in Valašská Bystřice and climbs steeply to Santov, then descends to Malá Bystřice. An alternative route leads from Santov via Vsacký Cáb to Dušná. The described section over Santov therefore includes a specifically noted steep climb; the alternative follows a different route via additional stops. You can compare the routes based on their course without assuming a walking time or distance.

Art and history in the village

The Památník Marie Bognerové is housed in the former school in the center of Valašská Bystřice. Marie Bognerová spent the last thirty years of her life in the village. Her memorial opened there in 2000 in the former school and municipal office building. The exhibition spans two rooms and includes her paintings, drawings, and watercolors, as well as items from her everyday life. It brings together artworks in several mediums and insights into the artist’s daily life.

The Portáš graves are located in the local cemetery, in front of the Baroque Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. They are a state-protected cultural monument. The site consists of two stone sarcophagi with carved crosses and inscriptions. In front of them are Baroque-worked sandstone slabs about 15 cm thick; skulls above crossed bones are set at their tips.

The people buried there are also identified: the right-hand grave holds Jiří Křenek, reeve of Velká Bystřice and a Portáš lieutenant—that is, a commander. His son Ondřej Křenek, a Portáš corporal and blacksmith, is buried beside him. The names and roles give the monument a specific historical dimension, while the sarcophagi, inscriptions, and sandstone slabs reveal its distinctive design.

Nearby, outside the village, stands the small Neo-Gothic Chapel of Pod Spinou on the ridge between the valleys. It is located at a junction of marked hiking trails between Valašská Bystřice and Rožnov pod Radhoštěm. This cultural landmark along the hiking trails complements the sights in the village.
