Lidečko: Nature, Wallachian Culture and Holidays in Czechia
Accommodation in Lidečko
Lidečko combines impressive sandstone cliffs, Wallachian history and a location in the Senice valley. The municipality lies on the border between the Vizovice Highlands and the Javorníky Mountains, making it an ideal base for a wide range of holiday activities: you can explore natural landmarks, discover regional traditions or plan a cycling route.
Čertovy skály and protected landscapes
The Čertovy skály natural monument lies on the northern edge of Lidečko. The rock formation is an approximately 150-metre-long sandstone wall reaching up to 25 metres in height. Climbers use Čertovy skály as a practice crag with around 100 established routes. If you would rather experience the cliffs without climbing equipment, you can include their distinctive shape in your day’s itinerary.
Directly below Čertovy skály, there is a car park, a children’s playground and a place to get refreshments. This can be taken into account on an outing with children, as can travelling by train: the ČD Lidečko-ves stop provides access to Čertovy skály. To the east of the railway, part of Lidečko’s cadastral area also lies within the Beskydy Protected Landscape Area.
The Kopce natural monument adds another distinctive landscape feature. It protects a large rockslide with fissure caves. The Vařákovy paseky educational trail, by contrast, focuses on the history of the burned-down Wallachian settlement of Vařákovy paseky. This makes it possible to combine observing nature with discovering the region’s past, without every day of your holiday having to feel the same.
Churches, a Nativity scene and Wallachian traditions
Lidečko’s cultural history is also unusually vivid. The Baroque Church of Saint Catherine of Alexandria is the municipality’s oldest historic building. Lidečko is also home to Early Baroque bells dedicated to Saint Catherine, dating from 1664, and to the Holy Saviour, dating from 1665. An approximately 1-kilometre route leads from the centre of the village to a typical Wallachian chapel built in 1949.
The Betlém in the Lidečko municipal office building is accessible year-round. It features more than 320 human and animal figures. Alongside the central Nativity scene, it depicts life in a Wallachian village in the 20th century. For families, this visit offers a tangible way to discover the region’s everyday history in an engaging form.
If you would like to plan your stay around local customs, the Dožínky harvest festival is a special occasion. It usually takes place at the end of August and includes a procession through the village in Wallachian traditional dress, as well as a programme beneath Čertovy skály. In early November, the Lidečkovský jarmark autumn fair is held. The programme includes a demonstration of a traditional home slaughter and a presentation of products made by local craftspeople and entrepreneurs.
Enjoy an active stay and choose the right accommodation
For cyclists, the northern section of the Bevlava cycle route runs from Ústí u Vsetína via Lidečko to Valašské Příkazy. This allows you to include Lidečko in a longer cycling tour or treat the village as one stage of your travel plans. When looking for accommodation, it is worth deciding on your preferred focus first: nature-filled days at Čertovy skály, cultural discoveries in the village or a combination with the cycle route will lead to different ideas of a suitable location.
For a more culture-focused stay, the centre of the village may be more appealing, especially if the Betlém, the church and the path to the Wallachian chapel are your main interests. You should check details of distance, facilities and availability for each specific listing.
More places to consider for your trip
If you would like to choose additional destinations alongside Lidečko, you can also explore Lhota U Vsetína, Kelč, Przno, Police, Branky, Hošťálková, Jablůnka and Velká Lhota. This allows you to compare different starting points and tailor your accommodation search to your preferred mix of nature, culture and active excursions.
