Vlčnov – Jízda králů and Winegrowing Culture

Vlčnov combines vibrant Moravian-Slovak traditions with a history of winegrowing, short local walks and a culture that is particularly evident around the Jízda králů. Jízda králů: Tradition, Music and Festival Culture

The Jízda králů takes place in Vlčnov every year; its tradition dates back more than 200 years. The Jízda králů from Moravian Slovakia, which includes the tradition in Vlčnov, has been included on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List. During the Jízda králů weekend, cimbalom and brass music can be heard. You can also visit a handicrafts market and purchase souvenirs.

Festive baked goods and wine from a local winery are available around the Jízda králů. The baked goods can be paired with wine or slivovice, a homemade plum brandy. The local Slovácká jizba is a museum in an old estate in the village centre below the church in Vlčnov. It comes alive during the Jízda králů and traditional Christmas celebrations in Vlčnov. The History of Winegrowing in the Vlčnovské búdy

The Vlčnovské búdy form the largest listed reserve settlement of above-ground winegrowing buildings in the Czech Republic and comprise 40 structures. Their first written mention dates back to 1544. The buildings are above-ground winegrowing facilities with two rooms: wine was pressed and tasted in one, while it was stored in the other. This clear division makes the historic function of the complex understandable to visitors as well, without reducing the history of winegrowing to merely a place name.

Another facet of local culture is presented by the Muzeum lidových pálenic in Vlčnov. The permanent exhibition is devoted to the home production of spirits in the Moravian-Slovak border region. For a more relaxing activity, there is also Koupaliště Vlčnov, with an adult pool up to 180 centimetres deep and a children’s pool.

Walks and Routes around Vlčnov

For a brief introduction to the village, the Malý okruh, an approximately half-hour village walk, is a good option. The Velký okruh leads from Rybáře Street onward towards the vineyards and takes about an hour. The two routes therefore differ primarily in their length and described course: the shorter route remains a compact village walk, while the longer one follows the route towards the vineyards.

Cycle route 5052 runs through Vlčnov towards Velká Javořina. In addition, the 45-kilometre Uherskohradišťská wine trail runs from Uherské Hradiště via Ostrožská Nová Ves and Vlčnov back to Uherské Hradiště.
