Stary Hrozenkov: Hiking, Traditions and the White Carpathians

Starý Hrozenkov combines protected landscape, distinctive natural features and vibrant Moravian traditions. The town is located in the Bílé Karpaty Protected Landscape Area and Biosphere Reserve. This makes it an ideal destination for anyone wishing to combine their stay with hiking, cycling, regional culture and festive events. When choosing accommodation in Stary Hrozenkov, you can therefore pay particular attention to which of these experiences should be the focus of your trip.

Hiking trails with landscapes and regional history

The Okolo Hrozenka educational trail is a 20-kilometre, moderately difficult hiking route. On eight information boards, it provides information about the life and culture of the Moravian Kopanice region in the past and present. The route thus combines physical activity with an accessible introduction to the region, without requiring you to limit yourself to simply visiting individual sights.

Another option is the Moravské Kopanice educational trail. It leads through the landscape around Žítková and Starý Hrozenkov and presents historical and natural sights, as well as particularly valuable plants and animals, at 14 stops. The trail begins in the village square of Starý Hrozenkov. This specific starting point is particularly useful when planning your day if you would like to incorporate the walk into your orientation around the area.

Protected nature and an unusual basalt formation

The natural character of the town also includes Hrozenkovský lom, which is also known as lom Skala. This natural area is the only place in the White Carpathians where columnar jointing of basalt can be observed. This special feature adds a distinct element alongside the hiking trails: while the educational trails combine landscape, history, and animal and plant life, the focus here is on a striking geological formation.

This also means that Starý Hrozenkov can be experienced in different ways on a trip involving several interests. You can plan your stay around a hiking route, include the Beskydsko-karpatská magistrála long-distance cycling route, or combine nature observation with cultural events. This long-distance cycling route passes through Starý Hrozenkov, making cycling another explicit focus for trip planning.

Church, folk costumes and festivals

The Church of the Virgin Mary is a late Baroque cultural monument dating from 1774. Every year on 8 September, it hosts a pilgrimage celebration for the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, associated with Hody and harvest thanksgiving festivals. At the beginning of September, Hody and harvest thanksgiving festivals also include a procession in traditional costumes through the village. Historical agricultural machinery and tools used by ancestors in their work in past centuries are displayed there.

The folk costume of Starý Hrozenkov is characterised by cross-stitch embroidery and is considered one of the most interesting folk costumes in the Slovácko region. At Hrozenkovské hody, traditional products of the Kopaničáři and products from local organic farmers are presented. Anyone wishing to experience regional culture not only through buildings but also through clothing, craftsmanship and products will find several different ways to do so here.

The annual calendar also includes the Kopaničárské slavnosti. This traditional folklore festival takes place every year with music, dancing, cimbalom music and other folk traditions. A brass music festival is held in Starý Hrozenkov every year in mid-June, with participants from Moravia and Slovakia. These recurring events are therefore just as important for timing a trip as the pilgrimage celebration on 8 September.

Another historical destination is the chapel by the pond, which dates from the 17th century. Together with the parish church from 1774, it shows that the town’s cultural points of interest originate from different periods.
