Uherský Ostroh

Uherský Ostroh combines castle history, a protected historic townscape, an unusual exhibition for children and adults, and the Morava waterway. This gives you a varied stay: you can explore the town’s oldest traces in the castle, walk through the historic centre or discover another side of the town at the marina.

Castle history with a tower view

The focal point is Zámek Uherský Ostroh. The complex was originally a medieval fortress and was rebuilt as a Renaissance castle in the 16th century. A residential tower from the 13th century has survived from the original castle and forms the core of today’s castle. The courtyard is surrounded by arcades, giving the complex a distinct architectural character.

A historical tour leads through the castle’s oldest rooms and up into the castle tower, Zámecká věž. From the tower, visitors can enjoy a view over the whole of Ostrožsko. The castle tower also houses an exhibition about Zdeněk Galuška, an artist born in Uherský Ostroh. The castle visit can therefore be experienced not only through architectural history but also through the story of a person connected with the town.

An exhibition like an interactive game

In the basement of Zámek Uherský Ostroh are several rooms designed as an interactive game for children and adults. The unique exhibition offers a visit to the legendary Atlantis. The new basement exhibition was opened to the public on 1 May 2015. This part of the castle therefore adds its own distinctive element alongside the historic rooms and the tower.

The Zámecká galerie is also part of the town’s cultural offerings and holds several exhibitions every year. Those wishing to combine different interests within a travel group will therefore find several clearly distinct themes at the castle: medieval fortification, Renaissance architecture, a historical tour, the view from the tower, the exhibition about Zdeněk Galuška and the interactive Atlantis experience.

Historic centre and Moto veterán muzeum

The historic centre of Uherský Ostroh was declared an urban heritage conservation zone in 1990. The triangular square Náměstí Sv. Ondřeje is lined along its edges with grand town houses. The parish church of sv. Ondřeje, built between 1751 and 1758, stands on the square. These individual buildings make a walk through the town a sequence of different periods and architectural forms, rather than limiting it to a single castle visit.

Another distinctive attraction lies in the historic part of Uherský Ostroh near the castle: the Moto veterán muzeum is housed in the functionalist Adler commercial and residential building. Its exhibitions focus on motoring, trade, various crafts and handicrafts. This adds an extra cultural stop to your day with a different focus from the castle and church.

On the Morava waterway

Přístaviště Uherský Ostroh is located on the right bank of the Morava at kilometre 22.2 of the waterway. Watercraft can moor there during the day and overnight. When choosing accommodation with different daily interests in mind, you can therefore weigh up exploring the castle and town on the one hand against spending time on the waterway on the other.
