Zlechov – Cycling, Wine and Local History

Zlechov combines cycling, wine and history in an unusual way. Cycle Route 5151 runs through the village, while the documented traces range from a Neolithic settlement dating to around 5000 BC to finds from the Late Roman period. There is also a present-day church with historical significance, small sacred monuments and guided wine tastings. Zlechov therefore offers various ways to discover the village – actively by bike, through its cultural history or by exploring the regional wine tradition.

Cycling connections for different tours

Cycle Route 5151 runs through Zlechov. From here, the cycling connection can be continued via Tupesy to Velehrad. Another option is the 80-kilometre Velkomoravská Pilgrimage Cycling Route, which is suitable for cycling enthusiasts. This feature is particularly relevant if you are planning a bike tour with small children or an additional trailer.

Church, village square and sacred monuments

A Chapel of St. Anne has been documented in Zlechov since the 14th century. The present Church of St. Anne was built in 1992–1994 in the immediate vicinity of the former chapel dating from the 14th century. In front of the church, on the village square, stands a Baroque statue of Saint John of Nepomuk from 1733.

At the cadastral boundary of Zlechov in the direction of Staré Město stands the stone cross known as the “Smírčí kříž”. It is considered one of the few surviving stone witnesses to an old legal custom in the region. The wayside shrine “Boží muka” is also part of the village’s sacred history, bearing witness to popular Baroque piety and the tradition of roadside sacred stations. Together, these sites create a nuanced picture of religious and legal-historical traces found at various locations throughout the municipality.

Archaeological discoveries in Valy and Padělky

In the Valy district, a settlement from the Late Roman period, dating from the 4th to 5th centuries, was discovered, with a total of 198 settlement features. It is among the oldest finds of its kind in the Czech Republic and was the only one of its kind to be fully excavated. A Neolithic settlement dating to around 5000 BC was also uncovered in the Padělky district. The finds include Linear Pottery culture ceramics and stone tools, including a shoe-last celt. Those interested in the early settlement of Central Europe will therefore encounter two clearly distinct periods and archaeological contexts in Zlechov.

Wine tradition and tastings

In the 16th century, Zlechov’s vineyards were among the largest in the region, covering 57 měřic. Today, Vinařství Jakubík offers guided wine tastings at its winery. A tasting includes six wine samples and lasts approximately one hour. A larger tasting includes more than 20 wines from tanks, as well as young and archival wines; it also includes a tour of the production area. This allows you to choose between a manageable tasting and a more in-depth insight into the wines and production.
