Popovice near Uherské Hradiště combines living Slovácko traditions with an unusual moving nativity scene, folk costumes and nature trails. When planning a stay, it helps to distinguish between a fixed festival date and attractions that allow for a quieter visit to the village. The actual location of your accommodation determines how far you need to travel; the name of the village alone does not guarantee a castle room or inexpensive holiday homes.

Popovice at a glance

  • The moving nativity scene in the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary was completed in 1950.
  • Its scene lasts about ten minutes and is accompanied by a carillon.
  • The Potomák Costume Museum showcases the development of the Kunovice folk costume.
  • The Slovácké hody s právem takes place on the first weekend in October.
  • Stráně u Popovic protects old orchards, pastures and the habitat of the brown-tail moth.

Church, nativity scene and folk costumes

The Church of Our Lady is a landmark in Popovice. Its tower houses a Gothic bell dating from 1508, one of the oldest surviving bells in the Uherské Hradiště area. Inside the church is the Pohyblivý betlém, a moving Christmas nativity scene. It was created by Antonín Potomák from Popovice and completed in 1950. The approximately ten-minute scene, accompanied by a carillon, is a good reason to plan more than a brief look at the building for your church visit. When the nativity scene is shown depends on current access; its existence does not guarantee a viewing at any hour.

The Potomák Costume Museum is devoted to the historical development of the Kunovice folk costume and its earlier variations. It displays 22 life-size adult figures and five children’s figures dressed in folk costumes. The museum complements the church with a different perspective on the region: religious art and a bell in one place, clothing and everyday culture in another. For culture-minded visitors, these two attractions can fill a day of their own, while accommodation should be assessed according to its actual location in relation to the village centre.

Festival days need their own planning

The Slovácké hody s právem takes place on the first weekend in October. On Saturday, accompanied by music, the chasa visits the homes of the selected stárci and stárky and asks their parents for permission. The procession then requests the festival rights, the hodové právo, at the municipal office. On Sunday, the chasa attends a festive Mass in folk costume; later, the procession goes through the village during the vození berana. This sequence makes the festival a special occasion, not an attraction available at any time. If you are staying overnight for the Hody, you need to choose the right dates and a base near the village festivities.

Outdoor activities and protected countryside

Amfík Bukovina is a leisure and sports complex in a natural setting. It has a multi-purpose court for ball games, a pétanque court, an outdoor workout area and a playground with a pirate ship, sandbox and swings. Hiking and cycling are also possible in the surrounding area. For a group with varied interests, the complex offers an alternative to a day spent at the church and museum. However, its facilities do not indicate whether a particular accommodation offers amenities for families.

The Stráně u Popovic Natural Monument encompasses old orchards, pastures and trees on south- and southwest-facing slopes. It particularly protects the habitat of the brown-tail moth. This landscape attraction should be approached differently from a sports ground: observing nature and respecting the protected areas are the priorities. For a stay with several points of interest, compare the actual address of your accommodation with the church, Amfík Bukovina and your planned nature trail. This will help you choose a suitable base based on your actual destinations, not on an unsupported price or booking promise.
