Jankovice between the Chřiby and the Jankovský Stream

Jankovice lies in the valley of the Chřiby on both sides of the Jankovský Stream. The town stretches from southeast to northwest, combining a clearly defined valley setting with a variety of opportunities for cultural and nature experiences. Church of the Assumption of Our Lady: History and Special Details

The Church of the Assumption of Our Lady is protected as a cultural monument. It was built from 1839 to 1841 and consecrated on 21 November 1841 by Josef Berdhauer, Dean of Uherské Hradiště. Since 3 May 1958, the church has been protected as a cultural monument; its register number is ÚSKP 27088/7-3338.

The church has a historic Baroque tower clock, which can be viewed year-round by prior telephone arrangement. The roof spaces are also home to a regionally significant summer colony of greater mouse-eared bats (Myotis myotis). The tower is inhabited by serotine bats (Eptesicus serotinus). The church forms part of the European Site of Importance “CZ0723750 Jankovice – kostel”. These features also make the place interesting for travellers who wish to combine architecture, regional history and nature observation.

The church was formerly included in the Otevřené brány programme. As part of this programme, it was open to visitors free of charge from 1 May to 30 September; free guided tours and commented visits were offered. This former participation should be distinguished from a visit to the tower clock, which requires prior telephone arrangement.

Chapel, Forest Valley and Springs

Jankovice has a second sacred building, the Chapel of Saint Anthony. It was built in 1906 by local resident Josef Zgarbík and stands beyond the town on a road leading deeper into the Chřiby. There, the forest encloses the valley on both sides. A spring lies near the chapel, with the year 1912 carved into its stone vault. During a stay, this place offers a different experience from the church: here, the focus is on the connection between the chapel, forest valley and spring.

Another spring is U Králova stolu. It is accessible year-round and can be reached from a field path via a well-trodden trail. Folklore in August

Jankovice’s cultural life includes the traditional krojované Hody, which form part of the Hody season in August. The Slovácké krojované Hody took place on 16 and 17 August 2025 at the Březičky grounds in Jankovice. The Folklorní festival Jankovice reached its fourth edition and provided a stage for dance and singing ensembles from Slovácko and Slovakia. In this way, folklore adds a seasonal focus to the buildings and trails described as available year-round.
