Osvetimany – Hiking Trails, Culture and Rocks

Osvětimany combines marked hiking trails, historic sites, rocky landscapes and seasonal activities. Anyone planning a trip with nature experiences and cultural discoveries will find various opportunities here: Marked hiking trails lead through Osvětimany, including routes to Sv. Kliment and Cimburk. The Chřiby hills around Osvětimany consist of resistant sandstone and feature numerous peaks, rock formations and ridges.

Hiking trails, rocks and an easy cycling loop

Yellow-, green- and blue-marked hiking trails lead through Osvětimany. On the yellow-marked trail, you can reach Sv. Kliment after 5 km and Cimburk after 7.5 km. Another 7 km hiking route starts in Osvětimany and leads via Hora sv. Kliment and Kazatelna to the ruins of Cimburk Castle.

Among the special natural destinations are the Osvětimanské skály. They are also called Čertovky and consist of several rock blocks. A well-trodden footpath through mature trees leads to them. The circular route “Pěšky za skalními útvary v Chřibech” also begins in Osvětimany. From the flat summit of the Zikmundova skála rock, you can see across a large part of the Chřiby hills.

For cycling, the Podchřibská cycling route No. 8 is available. The 36.5 km-long, easy circular route is intended for road and trekking bikes and starts and ends in Osvětimany.

Historic Sites and Living Traditions

Above Osvětimany stands the Baroque Church of St. Havel, a historic landmark more than 300 years old. The church contains a twelve-register organ built by organ maker Karel Neusser in 1889. Another cultural and historical site in the surrounding area is Hradisko sv. Klimenta. The Great Moravian historical site is associated with Cyril and Methodius and is freely accessible year-round.

The local festival tradition is also part of Osvětimany’s character. The traditional havelské hody s právem takes place annually in the first half of October. At the Hody, the Nedakoňanka brass band accompanied the procession and the evening dance event. The history of the village also includes a folk costume that was assigned to the group of podhorácký costumes and has not survived to the present day.

Winter Sports and Water in the Surrounding Area

Ski Park Osvětimany offers skiing and snowboarding on a 400 m-long slope with a vertical drop of 98 m. The ski park also rents ski and snowboard equipment. Skiing and snowboarding lessons are available for complete beginners, children and advanced skiers.

The Osvětimany reservoir lies in the surroundings of Osvětimany, in the valley of the Klimentský potok stream. The water surface covers 10.5 ha and is suitable for swimming, peaceful canoe trips and fishing.
