Discover Sulimov: Hiking Trails, Viewpoints and Village Culture

Sulimov combines the manageable layout of a Moravian roadside village with hiking trails, viewpoints and remarkable traces of regional culture. This creates a destination that can be discovered both on a short walk through the village and on longer routes in the surrounding area. Sulimov is particularly vivid where village history, landscape and local traditions lie directly alongside one another.

A Long Roadside Village with Distinctive Landmarks

Sulimov is a 971 m-long roadside village. There is an elevation difference of 66 m between the upper and lower parts of the village, making the settlement pattern apparent not only on a map but also while walking. In the upper part, Sulimov opens out into a village green. The bell tower stands there; it was built at the beginning of the 19th century. A registered major renovation took place in 1933, and the most recent structural alteration was carried out in 1984. Set into the slope in the upper part of Sulimov is the statue of Saint Anne, Socha svaté Anny. It was erected in 1944 and forms a distinctive landmark of the village. The Zapletalův kříž is also a point of orientation in the local landscape. The cross was erected above Sulimov in 1906 and is now located by the windbreak. It was completely renovated in September 2016; a new replica of the figure and a new cross made of Hořice sandstone with a figure of Christ were created as part of the work.

Hiking Routes of Different Lengths

For a compact outing, a short circular route through Sulimov is a good option. It covers just under 5 km and includes three viewpoints overlooking the Hostýnské vrchy and Vizovické vrchy. Those who prefer a longer hike can follow the 10 km route between Sulimov, Lubná and Vrbka. This route passes through interesting landscapes, along forest paths and to viewpoints. There is also a possible detour to a burial mound site. In the vicinity of Sulimov and Karolín, another viewpoint is located by a windbreak. It also serves as a junction for local hiking trails and offers views of the White Carpathians, the Zlín Region and the immediate surroundings of this section of the route. The “Stezky severními Chřiby” trail network complements this orientation with information boards, hiking signposts, viewpoints and benches. In some places, there are also educational elements for children.

Village History and Living Traditions

May devotions have been held at the bell tower again since 1997. Local history also includes clothing and language: around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, traditional dress was still worn in Sulimov, longest by women. A Moravian-Slovak dialect is still spoken in Sulimov today. The connection with Slivovitz is also visible both historically and today. In 1906, a distillery for producing Slivovitz was built at the lower end of the village near St. Trojice. Every year at the end of January, the “Velký sulimovský košt slivovice” takes place in a restaurant—a tasting featuring a competition for the best sample of the respective season. The residents of Sulimov use bus services for trips to Kroměříž, Kvasice, Otrokovice and Zlín.
